“It wasn't me, check the cameras!” Suspects' apparent verifiable responses might not indicate innocence
The verifiability of a suspect's alibi is often interpreted as a sign of innocence. Because the police resources are limited, verifiability could be used to dismiss suspects of minor offenses. We examined whether alibi verifiability actually indicates innocence for minor crimes. In Experiment 1, participants imagined they were guilty or innocent suspects of minor crimes and selected a response to convince the police of their innocence. Compared t…
Memory and Affective Discourses in Pepe Mujica, Lessons from the Flowerbed (Heidi Specogna, 2015) and El Pepe
José “Pepe” Mujica has become a charismatic figure not only in Latin American politics but across the world. This article analyzes the representation of memory and affect in two recent transnational documentaries that portray Mujica’s personal and political life: Pepe Mujica, Lessons from the Flowerbed (Heidi Specogna, 2015) and El Pepe: A Supreme Life (Emir Kusturica, 2018). It explores how the films represent Mujica’s memories and past, focusin…
How People [Try To] Detect Lies in Everyday Life
Laboratory-based deception-detection experiments often fail to capture the features of everyday life lie detection among ordinary citizens. In this study, we examined how people [try to] detect deception in real life. Over 10 weeks, every time the participants felt they had detected a lie, they filled in an online survey. Results show that, in everyday life, many lies are detected unexpectedly, often from non-behavioral indicators, that people su…

The Beyond Babel Multilingual Film Festival
This article discusses the potential of the Beyond Babel Film Festival, sponsored by the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), as a space of mediation that bridge communities and university constituencies and challenge the mono-linguistic perception of film and culture. Looking at this film festival as an example of a cultural event led by a higher education institution, the article focuses on the connections between creative cities and univer…
A pedagogical model for integrating film education and audio description in foreign language acquisition
Films are particularly powerful pedagogical tools that can help improve the linguistic skills of foreign language learners. Audio describing tasks can provide additional benefits. However, for an efficient use of feature films, learners need to be trained on how to elaborate audio description texts and develop active viewing strategies. This article discusses a language teaching approach that advocates the addition of Film Literacy education and …

Police Detection of Deception
Research questions the validity of behavioral deception cues; however, people believe behavioral cues are reliable deception indicators. Police officers and community members indicated both how lies can be detected (beliefs), and how they discovered a lie in the past (revealing information). Officers did the latter twice, prompted with a professional versus a personal context. For both groups, beliefs were primarily behavioral (e.g., demeanor) an…
Equality of opportunity with categorical data
This paper refers to some social evaluation problems when equity matters. We propose here a way of assessing the equality of opportunity that is applicable to categorical data. It consists of dividing society into groups with similar characteristics and to measure the dispersion of outcomes within those groups, from the distribution of the population in the different categories. An empirical illustration on the equality of opportunity in educatio…
A Newer Human Development Index
The Human Development Index has experienced substantial modifications in the 2010 edition of the Human Development Report (changes in some of the variables, a different aggregation procedure, and the introduction of distributive considerations, among others). Those changes respond to some well-known shortcomings of the traditional design of this index and entail substantial improvements. There are still some inconsistencies in the new constructio…
Heuristic versus Systematic Processing of Information in Detecting Deception
Research on nonverbal detection of deception has normally been conducted by asking observers to judge the veracity of a number of videotaped communications. These video clips have typically been very short. Observers have a tendency to judge most of these statements as truthful. An experiment was conducted in which 52 participants (44 women, 8 men; M age = 22.2 yr., SD = 2.2) who were taking a psychology and law course were requested to make judg…
