Database Semantics
For long-term upscaling, the computational reconstruction of a complex natural mechanism must be input-output equivalent with the prototype, i.e. the reconstruction must take the same input and produce the same output in the same processing order as the original. Accordingly, the modeling of natural language communication in Database Semantics (DBS) uses a time-linear derivation order for the speaker's output and the hearer's input. The language-…
A Computational Model of Natural Language Communication
Everyday life would be easier if we could simply talk with machines instead of having to program them. Before such talking robots can be built, however, there must be a theory of how communicating with natural language works. This requires not only a grammatical analysis of the language signs, but also a model of the cognitive agent, with interfaces for recognition and action, an internal database, and an algorithm for reading content in and out.…
What if Chomsky were right
The outcome of scientific research depends on how a phenomenon is viewed and how the questions are phrased. This applies also to the nativist view of language acquisition. As a complement to MacWhinney's discussion of nativism from the viewpoint of cognitive psychology, I would like to devote this commentary to the question of the title from the viewpoint of computational linguistics
Overcoming Language Barriers by Means of Computer
Language barriers arise between (i) different natural languages,(ii) different media of language,i.e., speaking, writing, and signing, and (iii) different kinds of agents, e.g., humans and machines. Up to now, these language barriers have been approached with different methods,e.g.,the design of universal languages or machine translation for different natural languages, systems of automatic speech recognition and synthesis for different media of lang…
