A Morphometric Study of the 11th – 18th Centuries AD Cranial Series from Russian Cities
Anthropological features of the Russian city population in the 11th – 18th centuries were studied using classical methods of craniometry as well as cranio- and osteoscopy. However, the method of geometric morphometry, which has been actively used since the 1990s and is a recent morphometric tool, has not yet been applied to Russian urban craniological series. We obtained and analyzed by the GM method three-dimensional copies of 225 skulls from th…
One Burial From the Cemetery Near the Transfiguration Church in Borovsk: Archaeological and Anthropological Aspects
В 2021 г. в г.
A Geometric Morphometric Study of the Facial Skeleton Variation in the Jetyasar Archaeological Culture Population of the Eastern Aral Region
Introduction. The origin of the Jetyasar culture’s population remains a subject of debate. It was generally accepted that the Xiongnu penetrated into the Aral Sea region and participated in the formation of the local population. Previous studies have shown a complex and admixed origin of the Jetyasar people. But the spread of the head deformation tradition in this population imposes serious limitations on the application of craniometric methods f…
A Case of Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy (HOA) in a Female Burial from the Cathedral Hill Necropolis in Vyazma (Late 13th c. AD)
The necropolis at the Cathedral Hill in Vyazma is mainly dated to the late 13th c. AD, and likely contains burials of the citizens of a high social status. A complete and well-preserved skeleton of a 35–40 year old female was excavated from Burial 15 of the necropolis. Almost all the bones of both upper and lower limbs were deformed due to excessive deposits of bone (periostitis) in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal areas. A combination of macroscop…

Morphological Patterns of the Early Mediaeval Population of the Eastern Aral Region (Based on the Materials of Altyn-Asar Burial Sites)
Introduction. Morphological studies of ancient peoples are associated with traditions of physical anthropology classifying data of similarity and differences of appearance of humans in the past. The use of standard measurement techniques contributed to the accumulation of a data array that allows drawing conclusions about the origin and environment of paleopopulations even with a small number and preservation of skeletal material. Archaeological …
