Making Money in Sixteenth-Century France: Currency, Culture, and the State by Jotham Parsons
J. Michael Hayden. The Catholicisms of Coutances: Varieties of Religion in Early Modern France, 1350–1789
As J. Michael Hayden states in the preface, The Catholicisms of Coutances is in many ways a companion volume to 600 Years of Reform: Bishops and the French Church, 1190–1789 (2005), coauthored with Malcolm Greenshields. Whereas the earlier volume addressed the entirety of the French church, this book has as its subject the Norman diocese of Coutances from 1350 to 1789. The stated aim of the book is to provide “a history of the changes in religiou…

The Family of Love and the
Ritual in Early Modern Europe
This is an ambitious, entertaining, and well-written, but nevertheless somewhat puzzling book. The author seeks to illustrate and analyze the process by which what were seen as powerful invocations of the divine in the Middle Ages were transformed into "mere" or "empty" ritual by the end of the eighteenth century.Rather than an original investigation of archival sources, it is a survey of the literature on ritual theory, and of published primary a…

A City in Conflict: Troyes during the French Wars of Religion
This text explores in depth the impact of the French wars of religion on the inhabitants of one French city, Troyes, in Champagne. Drawing on previously neglected sources, the author examines the individual and collective experience of the religious conflict in Troyes. She considers how the religious divisions created such brutal conflict between neighbours. The book deals with the attempt and ultimate failure to establish the Reformed Church in …
Civic Rivalry and the Boundaries of Civic Identity in the French Wars of Religion: Châlons-sur-Marne and the Towns of Champagne
An examination of the policies and actions of the city council of the Champagne town of Châlons-sur-Marne during the French Wars of Religion qualifies the view that the wars spelled the end of the bonne ville. In particular, this article examines Châlons' rivalries with the other towns of the region. The civil wars of the Catholic League in the late 1580s and early 1590s provided the opportunity to gain by military means what had previously been …

Provincial Governors and Their Regimes during the French Wars of Religion: The Duc de Guise and the City Council of Chalons-sur-Marne
