Open Access•Jennae Bulat, Amber Gove•ARTICLE•New Directions for Child and…•2022

In this commentary, we discuss the global similarities in the intersections of poverty, disability, and learning, and share lessons that are being learned internationally that can inform U.S. domestic research and implementation. These lessons cover multiple aspects of learning and development, instructional materials and approaches, integration of social emotional and school climate considerations, and engagement of families and communities

  • Designing for Scale

Open Access•Amber Gove, Medina Korda Poole et al.•ARTICLE•New Directions for Child and…•2017

Since 2008, the Ministries of Education in Liberia and Kenya have undertaken transitions from small-scale pilot programs to improve reading outcomes among primary learners to the large-scale implementation of reading interventions. The effects of the pilots on learning outcomes were significant, but questions remained regarding whether such large gains could be sustained at scale. In this article, the authors dissect the Liberian and Kenyan exper…

  • Sparking a Reading Revolution

Open Access•Amber Gove, Aarnout Brombacher et al.•ARTICLE•New Directions for Child and…•2017

This article examines the effects of two early grade reading interventions in two Arabic-speaking contexts (Egypt and Jordan), developed in partnership with ministries of education. The interventions relied on similar research bases for improving reading instruction in Arabic. In Egypt, the results of a 166-school pilot led to the national scale-up of the Early Grade Reading Program for more than 4 million children in grades 1-3. Informed by Egyp…

  • Measurement of Early Childhood Development and Learning under the Sustainable Development Goals

    Amber Gove, Maureen M Black•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Development•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Children’s early development serves as the foundation for later health, learning and well-being. The inclusion of early childhood development (ECD) in the Sustainable Development Goals implies that countries must report on the percentage of children under 5 years of age who are “developmentally on track.” This note briefly reflects on the history of global ECD goals and their measurement and outlines the challenge ahead: creating a workable strat…

  • The early grade reading assessment (Egra)

    Open Access•Margaret M Dubeck, Amber Gove•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Cited by: 14•References: 3

The rise and widespread adoption of the early grade reading assessment (EGRA) has produced an ample supply of critics and converts. This paper seeks to clarify the purpose of EGRA and its limitations. EGRA was created to inform education systems and programmes and alone, is not an intervention. Designed to measure some of the foundational literacy skills that readers need for beginning reading, EGRA is a collection of subtasks, each with a specif…
