Toledot Yeshu as a framework of identity resistance: The Portuguese case: Text and context (sixteenth–seventeenth centuries)
This essay focuses on extracts from Toledot Yeshu (Stories of Jesus) revealed in the trials of the Portuguese Inquisition from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Considering explicit and longer versions, as well as allusions that seem to point to the Jewish story of Jesus or other texts opposing Christianity, this paper aims to understand why they were used, and in what context, and explain their utilization across time. Additionally, it al…
The Agendas of the First New Christians in Israel and the Portuguese Empire (Sixteenth Century)
This paper aims to reveal and interpret the messianic messages arising from the Inquisition of Évora (Portugal) trials against a group of first generation converts following the general expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal in 1492 and 1496 respectively. These messages point to a memorialist construction on the phenomenon of the expulsions of Jews from France until they reached Portugal. Consequentially, both their new status as Christian…
Mobilities and Communities between North Africa and Portugal: Muslims and Jews in the Medieval and Early Modern Ages
This article reflects on the connections between geographical mobility and the constitution of a community in Portugal in the cases of Jews and Muslims in the Middle and Early Modern Ages. Data for the Middle Ages reveal greater mobility of Muslims between the two shores of the Mediterranean, whereas Jewish mobility seems to have been more prevalent within the Iberian kingdoms. This difference persisted in the Early Modern Age: many Muslims were …
Elizabethan Orientalia: ‘Jews’in Late Tudor England and the Ottoman Jews
Elizabeth I had people of Jewish origin in her personal circle, such as the famous physician Rodrigo Lopez, who was a relative of an influential Jew called Álvaro Mendes. Mendes was born in Portugal, and later took refuge in the Ottoman Empire, where he was known as Salomon ibn Ya’ish; we know that he exchanged correspondence with Elizabeth I, and the queen always favoured him in her missives to Sultan Murad III. The queen knew that Mendes receiv…

Peter A. Mazur, The New Christians of Spanish Naples, 1528-1671: A Fragile Elite
Jewish Studies in Portugal
Portuguese New Christians in the Turkish “Carrefour” Between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean in the Sixteenth Century: Decentralization and Conversion
This article analyzes some cases of multiple conversion among Portuguese Jews in the Ottoman Empire. Paradoxically, it was the lack of homogeneity of the Ottoman Sephardic communities that explained the success of “three-faced” men, such as Duarte da Paz, Tomé Pegado da Paz, and Matias Bicudo. They were able to change dress, religion, and masters during their careers as informers because they remained inconspicuous within the Ottoman Empire due t…
The Grão-Turco and the Jews: Translation to the West of two Oriental ‘powers’ (XVI–XVII centuries)
What rhetorical arguments can be found in various sources – pamphlets, religious literature, travelogues, and so on – to depict the historical sequence of events that led to the encounter between the expelled Iberian Jews and the Ottomans as a realm of emotions? The accusation made by some western travellers, such as the French geographer Nicolas de Nicolay, that the Sephardim Jews played a crucial role in the Ottoman Empire's technological moder…
Sephardic Intermediaries in the Ottoman Empire
With this article we aim to reflect upon the possibilities of Jewish personalities of Iberian origin to act as intermediaries with the West while residents in the Ottoman Empire and subjects of the Sultan. Unlike spying, a field where D. Yosef Nasi (c. 1520-1579), one of such personalities, excelled before, at the service of Portuguese Authorities, the visibility and centrality of their activity as middlemen near the Sublime Porte and some Sephar…
