Changing settlement patterns and subsistence strategies in Northeast China
Settlement Relocation, Urban Construction, and Social Transformation in China’s Central Plain, 2300–1500 b.c
Settlement relocation occurred repeatedly throughout global human history, often\nresulting in significant sociopolitical and economic changes. Historical records document\nthe use of settlement relocation as a strategy for social engineering in China no later than\nthe late Shang dynasty (1250–1046 B.C.). We employ placemaking theory to examine social changes associated with population movements to Taosi (2300–1900 B.C.) and Erlitou (1750–1520 B…
Plant remains recovered from the Houtaomuga site in Jilin Province, Northeast China

The Houtaomuga site is a good case study that can fill this void, documenting a long-term cultural sequence from the Early Holocene to historical periods. With a discovery of the earliest known pottery in the Dongbei region, Houtaomuga can offer insight into the Early Holocene adaptation. In o…

Investigation on the Yinjiawopu Site, a Medieval Salt Production Workshop in Northeast China
In 2014 and 2015, the Research Center for Chinese Frontier Archaeology at Jilin University and the Jilin Province Archaeological Research Institute jointly conducted two excavations at the Yinjiawopu Site, in Da’an City, Jilin Province, Northeast China. One burial, two canals, five leaching pits, two house-foundations, four hearths, 103 pits, two ditches, and over 800 pieces of artifacts dated from the 12th to the 13th centuries a.d. (the Liao-Ji…
