Study of the Patinas of an Outdoor Bronze Statue “Cesare Augusto” in Brindisi (Southern Italy)
The aim of this paper is the analysis of the main elements of the patinas of an outdoor bronze monument by using portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) equipment designed and assembled at the University of Salento. Thanks to the versatility of the ED-XRF portable apparatus, we carried out a scan based on a limited set of measurements that was representative of the studied surface of the monument before the restoration in a relativ…
Determining Gold Thickness in Multilayer Samples by Measuring the Intensity Ratio of the Au-Lα/Fe-Kα X-Ray
Multilayer samples are used in a wide range of sectors for their functionality. In the field of cultural heritage, multilayer samples are also common, as in the case of gilded or silvered alloys in the pigment layers in paintings. The X-ray ratios Lα/Lβ, Kα/Kβ, or K/L for an element or for different elements in a multilayer sample depend on the chemical composition and thickness of the superimposed layers and on the chemical composition and thick…
ED-XRF analysis of the mediaeval copper-based door in Monte Sant'Angelo (Southern Italy)
This work regards the analysis of a copper-based door (dated 1076 AD) located at the entrance to the sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo (Southern Italy) by using a non-destructive technique and in situ chemical analysis. The door does not show serious corrosive phenomena and presents several types of decorative elements such as two inlays (of silver and copper colour) and three engravings (of red, black and green colour). A portable energy dispersive…
