Igbo Political Systems
In spite of the increased and sophisticated scholarly output on the Igbo, there is still a tendency to depict precolonial Igbo political systems in general and therefore overly simplified and misleading terms. This paper is an attempt to reconfigure the depiction of those systems. As with previous works that have carefully studied precolonial Igbo, it emphasizes the diversity and complexity of Igbo political systems—and argues that because of the…
The United States and the Liquidation of European Colonial Rule in Tropical Africa, 1941-1963
The United States and Decolonization in West Africa, 1950-1960
As an investigation of America's response to the decolonization process in West Africa, The United States and Decolonization in West Africa, 1950-60 fills several important gaps. The history of America's involvement in Africa remains understudied. This book focuses on a neglected decade when the wind of change swept across Africa. Critical of the traditional nationalist interpretation of the decolonization process in Africa, the author begins his…
The United States and Decolonization in West Africa, 1950-1960
Eisenhower, Nkrumah and the Congo Crisis
Ghana achieved its independence from Britain in March 1957. The gist of this article is that Ghana started off on cordial terms with the USA, but by September 1960 this relationship was close to rupture, with Washington charging that Ghana was taking too much after the Soviet Union. It is, however, argued that the circumstanes leading up to the chilling of USA–Ghana relations in 1960 were more complex, and that the clear point of departure was th…
West Africans in Britain, 1900-1960: Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and Communism
Kenneth Onwuka Dike, Trade and Politics , and the Restoration of the African in History
The removal from history follows logically from the loss of power which colonialism represented. The power to act independently is the guarantee to participate actively and consciously in history. To be colonized is to be removed from history except in the most passive sense. Kenneth Onwuka Dike (1917-1983) is a definite turning point in African historical scholarship. West Africa (28 September 1957) appropriately called him “The Pioneer Historia…
The Political Economy of Aboh, 1830-1857
n his reconstruction of history of Aboh kingdom from midseventeenth century to 1900, K. O. Ogedengbe not only discussed state formation process and evolution of political, social, and economic institutions, but also sought to enlarge dimension of Niger Valley trade system, and in particular, to indicate role of kingdom of Aboh in this set up.' This paper is more narrowly focused. Well before nineteenth century, Lower Niger2 was a very busy commer…
Chieftaincy among the Igbo: A Guest on the Center-Stage
A striking feature of the contemporary Igbo political ecology is the overbearing presence of Their Highnesses, the traditional rulers. At least at the local levels, these kings are clearly the most visible and powerful political players. In many areas, their word is law. But more than ever before, these rulers are appropriating monarchical attributes to themselves: brand new titles, thrones, palaces, regalia, the requisite court mannerisms and ce…
