The Medical and the Anti-Modern: Horse-and-Buggy Mennonite Migrants and Medicine in Latin America
How did migrants from "old" societies negotiate their "new worlds"? How did they make the move from simple to complex societies, from village culture to urban society, from folk medicine to modern, state-sanctioned medicine? In this essay, I explore the question of medicine and social boundaries in an instance in which this trajectory of the primitive-to-the-modern has been complicated. It considers the medical history within a recent set of migr…
David L. Weaver-Zercher. Martyrs Mirror: A Social History
In 1660 a thirty-five-year-old Mennonite minister, Thielemann van Braght of Dordrecht in the Netherlands, completed the immense task of publishing a 1,500-page martyrology, the Martyrs Mirror. The book, whose featured martyrs are mostly Dutch Mennonites, marked the zenith of various collections of martyr stories published in the Netherlands shortly after the onset of religious freedom following William of Orange’s rebellion against the Spanish du…

“Come Watch This Spider”: Animals, Mennonites, and Indices of Modernity
Historians have increasingly written the animal into the narratives of social history. Broad studies document how humans managed animals, related to them, and were affected by them. Many of these studies critique the separation of humans from animals during the rise of an urban, commercialized society. Collectively, however, these works also present inter-species relations as an index of modernization – the rise of the classically “liberal” socie…
Competing Cosmologies: Reading Migration and Identity in an Ethno-religious Newspaper
Young, Well-Educated, and Adaptable: Chilean Exiles in Ontario and Quebec, 1973-2010
Between 1973 and 1978, six thousand Chileans leftists took refuge in central Canada after the Pinochet coup d’état. Once resettled at the northern extreme of the Americas, these political exiles had to find ways of coping with an abrupt and violent separation from their homeland that had deep material and emotional repercussions. In Young, Well-Educated, and Adaptable, Francis Peddie documents the experiences of twenty-one Chileans as they naviga…

Immigrants in Prairie Cities: Ethnic Diversity in Twentieth-Century Canada
Over the course of the twentieth century, sequential waves of immigrants from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa settled in the cities of the Canadian Prairies. In Immigrants in Prairie Cities, Royden Loewen and Gerald Friesen analyze the processes of cultural interaction and adaptation that unfolded in these urban centres and describe how this model of diversity has changed over time. The authors argue that intimate Prairie cities fostered …

Beyond the Monolith of Modernity: New Trends in Immigrant and Ethnic Rural History
This article suggests that the idea of "modernization," the uni-linear transition from peasantry to commercial agriculture, has shaped much of the writing of rural immigrant communities during the twentieth century. It also suggests that the history of immigrant and ethnic farm communities has begun to take a different tack during the last decade. This change reflects trends in the broader historiography of settlement society, including a shift f…

Finding Our Way: Rethinking Ethnocultural Relations in Canada
Many people think that ethnocultural politics in Canada are spiralling out of control, with ever more groups making ever greater demands. This book offers a more balanced and optimistic picture. It argues that we have learned many important lessons about how to accommodate ethnocultural diversity, lessons which can help us tackle the challenges still facing us. The first half of the book examines the situation of ethnic groups formed by immigrati…
