Impact of Clinic Closures on Women Obtaining Abortion Services After Implementation of a Restrictive Law in Texas
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the additional burdens experienced by Texas abortion patients whose nearest in-state clinic was one of more than half of facilities providing abortion that had closed after the introduction of House Bill 2 in 2013. METHODS: In mid-2014, we surveyed Texas-resident women seeking abortions in 10 Texas facilities (n = 398), including both Planned Parenthood-affiliated clinics and independent providers that performed more than …

Broadband Utilization in Space: Effects of Population and Economic Structure
The Internet segment of the information and communications technology industry has been forecast to reach nearly 1.5 billion users by 2007. Generally referred to as broadband, a number of alternative technologies are now deployed broadly across the United States. This article utilizes a unique data set of 9000 survey responses generated by the Pew Internet and American Life Project in 2004 to examine the impact of several spatial factors, includi…
The North American Free Trade Agreement and Public Health at the Us–mexico Border
In their article on public health on the US–Mexico border following the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),1 Homedes and Ugalde begin with a flawed premise—that free trade agreements, and globalization more generally, should have positive impacts on public health, in step with increased commerce and an invigorated spirit of international cooperation. This hypothesis is faulty for at least 2 reasons. First, NAFTA is only 1 …
The contribution of organizational justice in budget decision-making to federal managers' organizational commitment
This study examines the contribution of distributive, procedural, and interactional justice in Federal budget decision-making to Federal managers' commitment to the Federal government as an employing organization. A total of 1,358 useable surveys were received from a sample of 9,643 managers. Reliability coefficients were acceptable (> .70), and intercorrelations consistent with previous studies. Hierarchical regression analysis supported only ma…
Technology, Development, and Hemispheric Free Trade
Technology and its transfer take many forms, a fact that contributes to the difficulty of accounting for them in international trade agreements. This situation has been rendered even more complex by dramatic changes taking place in the organization of global manufacturing, the so-called Third Industrial Revolution, which itself rests on advances in telecommunications and informatics. Too much attention in Latin America has been directed toward ex…

Why Governments Grow: Measuring Public Sector Size
There is unlikely to be agreement about why government grows (much less whether or not this is beneficial) until there is some clearer notion of what is to be measured. Public revenues and expenditures are surely not sufficient to reflect the scope of the public sector, but what should be included? A distinguished international group of scholars consider the number of people employed, the extent of services performed, the quantity of laws enacted…

Theorizing About the Growth of Government: A Research Assessment
This paper surveys literature from several disciplines on how and why governments grow. The empirical question as to whether, or to what degree, government has grown is critically entwined with the nature of the ‘dependent variable’ chosen (federal government expenditures as a proportion of GNP, total real public expenditures, number of government employees as a percentage of the workforce, etc.). Specific approaches to the study of government gr…
