From Centre to Periphery… and Back? The Contribution of the Latvian Soviet Ethnographers to the Journal “Sovetskaya Etnografiya”
The occupation and colonial policy of the USSR resulted in a structural and substantive alteration of Latvia’s scientific scene. The professional connection between Latvian Soviet ethnographers and the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which supervised Soviet ethnography, demonstrated a pronounced centre-periphery dynamic (directives, coordination of plans and reports, criticism). The article focuses on Latvian Soviet et…
Dzīvās izstādes Rīgā 19. gadsimta pēdējās un 20. gadsimta pirmajās desmitgadēs
19. gadsimta otrajā pusē un laikā līdz Pirmajam pasaules karam mūsdienu Latvijas galvaspilsētas Rīgas kultūras norišu kalendārā atrodams plašs etnisko grupu un dīvaiņu (frīku) izrāžu piedāvājums. Izmantotais avotu materiāls – preses izdevumi, afišas un memuārliteratūra – šajā laika posmā liecina par vairāk nekā 40 dzīvo izstāžu ekspozīcijām. Eiropas un pasaules apritē esošo šī žanra izpildītāju pieejamību rīdzinieku un pilsētas viesu izklaidei no…
Displaying Exotic Otherness
At the turn of the 20th century, exotic shows as a form of displaying otherness gained wide popularity among various kinds of mass entertainment in Europe and the United States. Outlines of the Soviet Latvian Ethnography
Others among Others
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Latvians, like several other non-dominant nations that were part of large European empires, actively argued for their status as a nation and fought for the right to be equal partners in economy and politics and for the recognition of their culture. The process of constructing an ethnic identity involves not only inclusion, but also the formation of boundaries and exclusion, defining characteristics in…

The Role of Ethnographers in the Invention of Socialist Traditions in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic
This study, based on archive document research and analysis of publications by Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (LSSR) ethnographers, discusses the process of invention and implementation of Socialist traditions and the role of scientists in this. The introduction of Soviet traditions in Latvia did not begin immediately after the Second World War when the communist occupation regime was restored. The occupation regime in the framework of an anti…
Mārciena - between Legacy and Nostalgia
In 1993, after the Soviet army's withdrawal, the local municipal government of the tiny Latvian village of Mrciena had to take over a former residential district of the Soviet officers' families, called Gorodok, and the infrastructure of the Soviet army unit that was located in the nearby forest. Over the past twenty years, the municipality has tried to find the best solution to protect the site from decay. Businessmen have attempted to raise the…
