  • Macro to Micro Stratigraphic and Artefactual Evidence From an Early Iron Age Smithy at the Pungrt Hillfort (Central Slovenia)

Open Access•Luka Gruškovnjak, Agni Prijatelj et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2025

The dataset presented in this paper includes data about macro- and micro-stratigraphy, as well as macro- and micro-artefacts from the Early Iron Age smithy (Building 24, phase IIb2) at the Pungrt Hillfort, Central Slovenia. The data were collected during the archaeological excavation and geoarchaeological sampling at the site, followed by laboratory processing and analysis of the gathered samples. All the data are stored at the Repository of the …

  • From macro to micro approaches in settlement archaeology: A case study of an Early Iron Age smithy at the Pungrt hillfort (Central Slovenia)

Open Access•Luka Gruškovnjak, Agni Prijatelj et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2025

In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary and multiscalar study of an Early Iron Age smithy uncovered at the Pungrt hillfort in Central Slovenia. By examining and comparing the stratigraphic and artefactual evidence preserved at both macro- and micro-scales this study highlights the importance of integrated micromorphological and micro-refuse analyses in settlement contexts. Our integrated approach allowed us to identify the blacksmith’s wor…

  • Statistical Learning Improves Classification of Limestone Provenance

    Open Access•Rok Brajkovič, Klemen Koselj•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 2

Determining the lithostratigraphic provenance of limestone artefacts is challenging. We addressed the issue by analysing Roman stone artefacts, where previously traditionalpetrological methods failed to identify the provenance of 72% of the products due to the predominance of micrite limestone. We applied statistical classification methods to 15 artefacts using linear discriminant analysis, decision trees, random forest, and support vector machin…

  • Stone products of the Roman municipium of Neviodunum, Pannonia (modern Drnovo, Slovenia)

Open Access•Katharina Zanier, Rok Brajkovič et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 23

The paper presents the lithologies used in the stone products of Neviodunum (modern Drnovo in Slovenia), a Roman municipium in south‐western Pannonia. For this purpose, 95 stone monuments were assessed. Petrographic and biostratigraphic analyses were carried out on 56 archaeological and 57 geological samples. Our research shows that, besides some rare exceptions, most stone products refer to three lithostratigraphic units: the Middle Miocene ‘Lit…

  • Mid‐Cretaceous calcarenite in stone products from the Roman colony of Emona, Regio X (modern Ljubljana, Slovenia)

Open Access•Rok Brajkovič, Bojan Djurić et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 26

Over the course of studying stone products from the Roman colony of Emona (Regio X), stratigraphically undefined calcarenite that was used to make simple sepulchral and architectural stone products was detected. The calcarenite used is late Aptian to early Cenomanian in age. The corresponding facies were found in the Lower Flyschoid Formation outcropping near the town of Medvode, within the local radius of Emona. The Roman quarry was likely locat…

  • Kamnolom apnenca v Podpeči pri Ljubljani in njegovi izdelki

V skrajno severne…

  • Provenance analysis of Roman limestone artefacts from Colonia Iulia Emona (Marof archaeological site, Slovenia)

Open Access•Petra Žvab Rožič, Boštjan Rožič et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•References: 24

The Marof archaeological site, which dates back to the 1st–5th centuries ce , lies 10 km SE of the Roman settlement of Emona of Regio X (Venetia and Histria). In addition to other artefacts, several stone blocks were recovered. The blocks include worked (shaped) and unworked (natural forms) objects. The provenance of these stones was determined based on their lithological characteristics. The analysis shows that the stone is of Early Jurassic age…
