  • From the Green to the Just Transition: The Emergence of the Compensatory State in the EU's Approach to Climate Change

    Open Access•Gianmarco Fifi, Xinchuchu Gao•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 42

In this paper, we investigate the adaptation of the EU climate stances between the early 2000s until today. Historically tracing the EU's approach to the green transition, we highlight an increasing role of interventionist frames within European discourses and policies. As the realms of intervention have increased, so has the EU's emphasis on the need to provide social protection for the sections of the population that have more to lose from a la…

  • Towards a political economy of the green transition

    Open Access•Gianmarco Fifi•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2025

This review examines three recent books on the European Green Deal (EGD), analyzing the political and economic challenges of the EU's ambitious climate neutrality goals. The books offer comparative analysis of EU and US climate governance through punctuated equilibrium theory, explore barriers to sustainability across multiple policy domains, and investigate the legal dimensions of ecological sustainability. Though providing valuable empirical co…

  • Inventing and Re-inventing Populism to Protect Europe: The Case of the Italian Partito Democratico , 2007-2022

    Open Access•Gianmarco Fifi•ARTICLE•The International Spectator•2025

Populism has been used by its critics to support European integration. The case of the Italian Partito Democratico (PD) highlights that, as a relatively empty signifier, ‘populism’ affords parties scope to adapt to different circumstances, as evidenced by the evolving use of the term in relation to shifts in policymaking paradigms at the European level. In the period between the Eurozone crisis and the Covid pandemic, the PD changed the connotati…

  • Still together, after all: Consensual dynamics and the persistence of the growth paradigm among left-wing groups in Italy

  • A serious crisis that didn't go to waste? The EU, the Covid-19 pandemic and the role of ambiguity in crisis-management

    Open Access•Gianmarco Fifi•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2025•Cited by: 9•References: 41

Was the European response to the Covid-19 crisis coherent to the challenges posed by the pandemic? The paper argues that the response to the pandemic had little to do with the characteristics of the crisis at hand and was rather linked to pre-conceived priorities of key actors in Europe (particularly surrounding the need to foster the green transition). The pandemic was thus considered as the epitome of an exogenous shock, to which no clear long-…

  • Adapting to the market: Leftist ideological justifications of liberal economic policies, 1977–1986

    Open Access•Virginia Crespi de Valldaura, Gianmarco Fifi•ARTICLE•New Political Economy•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Why do leftist forces accept, support and adopt free-market policies? To answer this question, we carry out a comparative study of left-wing groups (both parties and trade unions) in France, Italy and Spain during the late 1970s and the early 1980s.This period is widely acknowledged in international political economy to have represented a paradigm shift from post-war Keynesianism to neoliberal policy-making.We employ indepth content analysis of me…

  • On Antonio Gramsci's hidden concept: Fetishism

    Open Access•Gianmarco Fifi•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 20

The article sheds light on Gramsci's use of the term fetishism. Despite not being as present and pervasive within the Prison Notebooks as other concepts, more deeply rooted in Gramscian scholarship (such as hegemony and historic bloc), fetishism is not as marginal in Gramsci's reflection as it is usually believed. Linking his understanding of the term to the one developed by Marx and by the later unorthodox Marxist scholarship, I shall argue that…

  • From social protection to ‘progressive neoliberalism’: Writing the Left into the rise and resilience of neoliberal policies (1968–2019)

    Open Access•Gianmarco Fifi•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 27

This article asks the following question: what role did the political Left and labour organisations play in the development and furthering of neoliberal policies in Italy? In particular, I explore the relationship between the moderation of the Italian Left’s economic proposals begun towards the end of the 1970s and the affirmation of neoliberal policy-making. The shift in leftist economic ideas rested on three main grounds: i) the acceptance that…
