  • Finding Joy and Elegy: Poetry from Pandemic

    Open Access•Frank G Karioris, Frank Karioris•ARTICLE•Lateral•2021

Amidst the despair, desperation, death, and economic deprivation of the pandemic, poetry—and creative outlets more broadly—have arisen to assist us in both making sense of the world at large, as well as addressing our own struggles during and from these challenges. This essay seeks to put these works into conversation as part of a process—along with quarantine—of seeding, an opportunity to grow new roots and networks. Drawing from a field of esta…

  • Bound to be grooms: The imbrication of economy, ecology, and bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan

    Elena Kim, Frank G Karioris•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 8

This article explores intersections among gender, violence and socio-economic insecurities through examining the practice of women’s abduction for forced marriage in rural Kyrgyzstan. In the post-Soviet period, bride-kidnapping has been discussed as an expression of reviving 'traditional' ethnic culture and as a system of social rules that constrain actors in a variety of ways. Understanding of this practice requires a more nuanced analysis of th…

  • When two become one: Sexuality Studies and Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities

    Frank G Karioris, J A Allan•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 28

Men think about sex ... a lot. Is this a problem or is this a site for reformation? In this paper, we set out to think actively, deeply, about the question of sexuality, to penetrate the limits of men and masculinity studies, and to tease at a range of questions that it seems the field is not attending to for any number of reasons. When men’s studies scholars speak of sex, we often speak of rape culture, violent sex, ideas of entitlement to sex, …

  • Grow a Pair! Critically Analyzing Masculinity and the Testicles

    Open Access•Frank G Karioris, J A Allan•ARTICLE•The Journal of Men s Studies•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The testicles are remarkably important to the construction of male identity. We tell men to “grow a pair.” So what, we might ask, then is the place of the testicles in men’s studies? Truth be told, the testicles have not occupied significant attention in gender studies, and certainly not in the same way as the phallus has. This article, therefore, seeks to position the testicles as an object of study in the field of men’s studies

  • Temporally Adrift and Permanently Liminal: Relations, Distalgia and a U.S. University as Site of Transition and Frontier

    Open Access•Frank G Karioris•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2016•References: 10

This article seeks to explore temporal reconceptualizations and forms of nostalgia that first-year university men are experiencing and creating. It will explore the ways that time can be conceived of in relation to the present and a future that is not-yet-existent. The article takes as its starting point ethnographic fieldwork in the 21st century at a private, Catholic university in the U.S. and, in particular, men in an all-male residence hall. …

    Open Access•Frank G Karioris•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 11

This article seeks to begin an exploration of the ways that male homosociality can be investigated and talked about using a multidimensional and intersectional lens. In doing this, it puts to the fore an understanding and discussion of patriarchy, while simultaneously situating the discussion amidst current American visions of masculinity. The article aims to provide a further starting point for theorising about men's homosocial relations and the…
