Beyond the Industry. A Bordieuan Cartography of the Video Game Field
Pierre Bourdieu's sociological framework has become foundational in Game Studies, underpinning fundamental concepts like Mia Consalvo's gaming capital, Graeme Kirkpatrick's gamer habitus, and Brendan Keogh's video game production field. This article synthesizes research deploying Bourdieu's triad—field, capital, and habitus—to construct a cartography of the video game field. Our theoretical-methodological intervention offers: 1) the exploration o…
Are Inclusion and Diversity Even Possible? A Best-Fit Framework Synthesis of Video Game Development Ethnographies
This article synthesizes qualitative evidence from ethnographies within video game development companies. A best-fit framework synthesis was conducted, combining the strengths of framework and thematic analysis to interpret the results of 55 ethnographic studies. The analysis revealed that the field of video game development is dominated by technologists and publishers with economic and cultural capitals determining the positions within the field…
The possibility of being a Jew: An autoethnographic journey from shattered memory to the memorial body
Through the story of my relationship with Jewishness, I propose a journey that begins with internalised stigma, moves through the recognition of the trauma of the Holocaust within me and ends with the reconstitution of an anguished body as a living memory of the Holocaust. The construction of this text is a performative exercise in constituting a new inscription in the cultural narrative of the transmission of trauma. Autoethnographic writing for…

Imagined communities: Banal nationalism in Barcelona 'Locutorios
Despite the huge competition that has emerged as a result of the on-going increase in the available ways one can connect to telephone and computer networks, Barcelona call shops, known as "locutorios," are relatively successful small businesses. As a result of our research using a collective ethnographic fieldwork of "locutorios" in Barcelona, we articulated Michael Billig's concept of banal nationalism and Benedict Anderson's concept of imagined…
In this article we propose a re-reading and a re-interpretation of subjectivation processes which underlie the forms of relationship, identity construction and socialization. Our main goal is to unproblematize the relationships between people and ICT and between people through ICT. In this respect, we do not consider that consumption of ICT impact us and damages or affects us due to their harmful effects, but as a continuous process between 'on' …
Gender Technological Performativity: Exploring the Digital Divide in Video Gaming
In this article we revise the field of gender and video games. Video games for their ludic component, which makes their consumption facultative and informal, allow us to understand some of the mechanisms that maintain girls away from the technological realm without using institutional reasons which do not correctly explain the "voluntary" exclusions, that is to say those produced because the person "does not want" or "does not show interest" in p…

New liyerary forms for the social sciences: Autoethnography
This is a study of what it is to write up a piece of research. That is, a study of the power of writing. Postmodernism has had its sway over social psychology as such as over the other social sciences. It has set a query against established forms of scientific writing, and what they imply. Social studies of science and technology have debunked the fiction of scientific method, especially in the allegedly "hard" sciences. Equally, in the so-called…

Cultures do not exist
Too often we forget that culture is not a social fact but a concept. In this article it will be argued that cultures do not exist, in spite of their apparent pervasiveness within the social sciences and in daily life. A question will be raised as to the ideological role of the idea of culture, that is, what effects does it produce in the social construction of reality? To do that, the concept and its uses will be criticized, noting that the very …
Culturalisme.
