Comparison of cohorts before and after revision of the national LTCI system for dementia patients found no significant difference in mean MMSE scores at the time of AD diagnosis or start of initial treatment. Five Classrooms: Different forms of ‘democracies’ and their relationship to cultural pluralism(s)
This paper explores the issue of democracy and the role of the democratic classroom in the development of society in general, and the way in which educators understand and deal with diversity in particular. Children's communication about distressing events: The role of emotional openness and psychological attributes of family members
This study documents the importance of emotional openness to the recovery process in families following traumatic events. In this longitudinal study, relationships are examined between emotional openness and parents' psychological attributes, and mothers' and children's open disclosure of feelings. After September 11, 2001, 48 mothers and their 11-year-old children were interviewed about their reactions to the terrorist attacks. Measures included…
Semiosis as an educational instrument: The irrelevance of mediation and the relevance of social capital
This paper explores semiosis as an instrument to be used in the classroom in the development of democratic education and a democratic society. In doing so we show the important links between Peirce's later semiotic theory and Dewey's theory of education. The argument is made that later Peirce's works on semiotics should be understood within its Pragmatic context. Semiotics' major contribution to the human condition is as a process and not as a de…
Predicting Children's Reactions to Terrorist Attacks: The Importance of Self-Reports and Preexisting Characteristics
Forty-eight mothers and their 11-year-old children, who were participants in a longitudinal study, were interviewed in their home after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Children's verbatim statements were analyzed for fear, separation anxiety, denial, rationalization, anger, and empathy. In the final model, preexisting child anxiety and maternal worry significantly explained 33% of the variance in children's self-reported fearful feel…
