Unpacking land-associated assemblages 'from below
Market-oriented agrarian transformation challenges notions of the ‘communal’ nature of customary land. This paper foregrounds the emergent patterns of land access in the context of an expanding tree-crop commodity frontier in the former ‘homeland’ of Venda, South Africa. We develop an actor-focused, assemblage approach and use it to identify how three entrepreneurial, accumulating tree-crop farmers engaging in commercial macadamia nut and avocado…
Rethinking the divide
The debate on smallholder commodification trajectories tends to be polarised between mainstream approaches that advocate tighter integration of smallholders into global value chains, and alternative approaches that favour localised markets on the grounds that these provide greater autonomy over production and marketing, and allow a greater share of value to be realised for producers and the wider community. This debate obscures the interrelations…
Expanding commodity frontiers and the emergence of customary land markets
Contemporary discourses on customary land tenure in Africa, and South Africa in particular, have emphasized the socially embedded and flexible nature of customary land rights, recognising these as inherently more ‘pro-poor’ than individual titling. Based on in-depth interviews and participant observations in Venda, a former homeland in South Africa, this paper explores how in the context of expanding commodity frontiers, customary land markets ha…
Nitrogen fixation estimates for the Baltic Sea indicate high rates for the previously overlooked Bothnian Sea
Dense blooms of diazotrophic filamentous cyanobacteria are formed every summer in the Baltic Sea. We estimated their contribution to nitrogen fixation by combining two decades of cyanobacterial biovolume monitoring data with recently measured genera-specific nitrogen fixation rates. In the Bothnian Sea, estimated nitrogen fixation rates were 80 kt N year −1 , which has doubled during recent decades and now exceeds external loading from rivers and…
Socio-economic differentiation from a class-analytic perspective
South African agrarian policy aims to integrate smallholder tree-crop farmers into high-end value chains with growth and employment potential, generally neglecting socio-economic differentiation amongst them. This paper aims to analyse socio-economic differentiation amongst tree-crop farmers in Vhembe District, Limpopo, using a class-based analysis based on livelihood diversification and accumulation. Cluster analysis of survey data and semi-stru…
