From the laboratory to the classroom: Rethinking ERP methods in second language acquisition
Event-related potentials (ERPs) are widely used to study second language acquisition. However, ERP research has largely remained confined to laboratory paradigms and has had limited impact on second language teaching and assessment. A case in point are early studies which have shown that language instruction can shape neural responses, yet this line of work has not been developed or applied further. Current ERP studies often rely on loosely defin…
Acculturation and English proficiency among adult newcomer immigrant ESL learners in Canada across language instruction methods
Aims and objectives: This study investigated the impact of different instructional environments on learners' acculturation and English language skills among adult English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in Canada to address this gap in the literature. Design: Using a series of qualitative and standardized measures, a robust mixed-methods approach was taken to explore the relationships among those variables. This study included 56 participants…
How emotional states modulate cognitive control strategies across language-switching contexts
The present study investigates how emotional states (positive, negative, neutral) and language-switching contexts with different switching frequencies (low: 25%, medium: 50%, high: 75%) jointly modulate executive control among unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals. By combining a language-switching task with a Flanker task within response trials, we found that compared to low- and high-switching contexts, negative states enhanced executive contro…

Parents as the first teachers: An exploratory study of parent perceptions and use of an online instructional vocabulary module for parents
This exploratory study evaluates the effectiveness of an online instructional vocabulary module in enhancing parents’ understanding of early childhood vocabulary development and how to demonstrate this in a home environment. Forty-one parents viewed the vocabulary video and completed pre- and post-surveys. While most parents could define ‘vocabulary’ pre-viewing, post-viewing responses showed improved identification of its importance. Participant…
Cross-language activation and semantic judgements of translation ambiguous words among Chinese–English bilinguals
Aims and Objectives: Translation ambiguous words are lexical items with one-to-many equivalents in another language. Some of these equivalents are more dominant (i.e., more frequently used) than others. The aim of the present study is to explore non-target language activation of translation ambiguous words among Chinese–English bilinguals. Methodology: The implicit priming paradigm was used in three experiments to explore the activation of primar…
The role of prosodic sensitivity and executive functions in L2 reading: The moderated mediation effect
Prosody refers to stress and intonation patterns in a language. Previous studies have found that prosodic sensitivity (PS) and executive functions can affect reading comprehension in first (L1) and second languages (L2). The current study examined these factors among a group of L1 Mandarin speakers learning L2 English who participated in a series of tasks measuring phonological awareness, Mandarin tone sensitivity, English PS, along with three sp…
Reversal rewards drive language switching during observational learning: Evidence from a dual-brain EEG study
Research on the cognitive neural mechanisms of language control often overlooks the role of rewards. To investigate how reversal rewards affect bilingual language switching during observational learning, we conducted a dual-brain electroencephalography (EEG) study. Participants, classified as direct learners or observers, performed a voluntary language-switching task under dynamic reward conditions. Our results demonstrated that both direct learn…
Learning Novel Words in an Immersive Virtual-Reality Context: Tracking Lexicalization Through Behavioral and Event-Related-Potential Measures
The present study used immersive virtual-reality (iVR) technology to simulate a real-life environment and examined its impact on novel-word learning and lexicalization. On Days 1-3, Chinese-speaking participants learned German words in iVR and traditional picture-word (PW) association contexts. A semantic-priming task was used to measure word lexicalization on Day 4, and again 6 months later. The behavioral findings of an immediate posttest showe…
An ERP study on novel word learning in an immersive virtual reality context
In this behavioral and electrophysiological study, we compare novel word learning, particularly lexical form acquisition, in an immersive virtual reality (VR) context with a picture-word (PW) association context. We also test whether inhibitory control and age of second language acquisition (L2 AoA) have modulating effects. Chinese speakers of L2 English learned two sets of German words, one set in each of the contexts. Behavioral performance fro…
Neural correlates of compound head position in language control: Evidence from simultaneous production and comprehension
Compound words consist of two or more words which combine to form a single word or phrase that acts as one. In English, the head of compound words is usually, but not always, the right-most root (e.g., “paycheck” is a noun because the head, “check,” is a noun). The current study explores the effects of head position on language control by examining language switching performance through electroencephalography (EEG). Twenty-one pairs of Chinese (L…
The partially overlapping nature of inhibitory control and preparatory control during language and task switching
The relationship between language switching and task switching has been well studied in bilingualism literature. This study employs novel experiments involving magnitude-parity switching and transparency-orientation switching and compares the costs associated with these two types of task switching with language switching. Switching costs and the reduction in switching costs (RISC) effect were used as indices of inhibitory control and preparatory …
The role of morphological configuration in language control during bilingual production and comprehension
When bilinguals switch between their two languages, they often alternate between words whose formation rules in one language are different from the other (e.g., a noun-verb compound in one language may be a verb-noun compound in another language). In this study, we analyze behavioral performance and electrophysiological activity to examine the effects of morphological configuration on language control during production and comprehension. Chinese–…
The role of immersion learning in the acquisition and processing of L2 gender agreement
In this paper, we examine the effects of learning environment on second language (L2) gender agreement. English speakers learning L2 Spanish participated in a self-paced reading task and a picture selection task prior to and after a short-term study abroad experience. The results from the self-paced reading task showed that their reliance on the masculine article as the default (e.g., McCarthy, Corrine. 2008. Morphological variability in the comp…
The role of language control in cross-language phoneme processing: Evidence from Chinese–English bilinguals
Aims: Cross-language interference studies of language control mainly focus on the lexical level, whereas language control may occur at the smallest unit phonemic level of language. In the present study, we examined the role of language control during cross-language phoneme processing. Design: Participants used one language to name pinyin or alphabet in the single-language blocks, and they used two languages for naming in the mixed-language blocks…
The influence of peripheral emotions on inhibitory control among children
In this study, we investigated the cognitive-emotional interplay by measuring the effects of executive competition (Pessoa, 2013), i.e., how inhibitory control is influenced when emotional information is encountered. Sixty-three children (8 to 9 years of age) participated in an inhibition task (central task) accompanied by happy, sad, or neutral emoticons (displayed in the periphery). Typical interference effects were found in the main task for s…
An examination of prosody and second language sentence processing through pause insertion
Objectives: Research on second language (L2) sentence comprehension often has examined reliance on semantic and syntactic information but has left aside for the most part the role of prosodic cues. In the present study, we compare less- and more-proficient L2 learners’ integration of prosody and syntax structure during auditory L2 sentence comprehension. Design: Two group Chinese learners of L2 English learners (A2 and C1 levels) participated in …

Ofelia Garcia: Bilingual Education in the 21st Century: A Global Perspective.
In a world where bilingualism is far more common than monolingualism, Ofelia García’s Bilingual Education in the 21st Century: A Global Perspective is the perfect demonstration of the need to widen the linguistic ideological lens used to interpret theories of bilingual education in order to fully embrace and reflect this reality. Even though it may be common knowledge to state that today’s world is becoming more multilingual and multicultural due…
Inhibitory control processes and lexical access in trilingual speech production
This study tests whether or not trilingual language learners rely on inhibitory control (IC) when accessing words during speech production. In particular, it investigates the extent to which second language (L2) and third language (L3) lexical robustness modulates such reliance. English language learners of French and Spanish participated in a picture-naming task containing language switches in all three of their languages. Analyses were conducte…

Input Processing and Processing Instruction: Pedagogical and cognitive considerations for L3 acquisition
Input Processing refers to the initial process by which learners connect grammatical forms with their meanings as well as how they interpret the roles of nouns in relationship to verbs. The pedagogical intervention derived from this theoretical framework, Processing Instruction (PI), has consistently shown success at improving second language (L2) learners’ processing strategies. PI helps learners to intake “better input” by directing their atten…
The Handbook of Translation and Cognition
This chapter aims to show how cognitive approaches in translation studies recognize social or cultural aspects in the translation event and integrate them into their models to reflect the translation process. Among the pioneering scholars who include explicit references to social aspects in their models of dynamic meaning construction are Larson, who takes a tripartite view of meaning with referential, structural and situational elements, and Kuß…
