Tone and voicing in Cao Bằng Tai
This study examines the phonetic realization of tones and onsets in Cao Bằng Tai. Previous studies of this language indicate that historically voiced plosives remain redundantly cued by closure voicing and/or breathy voice. Our age- and gender-stratified sample of 19 speakers reveals a linguistically homogeneous speech community in which historically voiced plosives are realized as voiceless and lightly aspirated, potentially merging with the asp…
Canada's Federal Electoral Districts, 1867–2021
We introduce new data resources to enable spatial and nonspatial research on Canadian elections, electoral history and political geography. These include a comprehensive set of distinct identification codes for every federal electoral district in Canada from 1867 to the present, a complete set of digital boundary files for these electoral districts, historical census data aggregated to federal electoral districts, and tools to connect our distric…
Individuals, communities, and sound change
Do individual differences affect sound change? Traditional approaches to phonetic and phonological change typically downplay differences between the individuals who make up a speech community that is undergoing change, but this has been questioned in recent years in a number of ways from within several distinct traditions of research. The articles in the Glossa Special Collection to which this article is an introduction consider the extent to whi…

The effectiveness of the Grandparent Triple P program with Chinese families
This study described the development and evaluation of the Grandparent Triple P (GTP) program with Hong Kong Chinese families. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 56 grandparents being randomized to either the intervention condition (GTP) or a waitlist control group. Focus groups were also conducted at post-intervention to explore the experience of participants and facilitators who participated in the program. Participants completed …

Vietnamese (Hanoi Vietnamese)
Vietnamese, the official language of Vietnam, is spoken natively by over seventy-five million people in Vietnam and greater Southeast Asia as well as by some two million overseas, predominantly in France, Australia, and the United States. The genetic affiliation of Vietnamese has been at times the subject of considerable debate (Diffloth 1992). Scholars such as Tabard (1838) maintained a relation to Chinese, while Maspero (1912), despite noting s…
