  • An Account of the British Settlement of Aden in Arabia

    F Hunter, F M Hunter•BOOK•Account of the British Settlement…•2013•Cited by: 5

First published in 1877, the following monograph gives account of the settlement of Aden in six parts that include the records of the Adea Residency, a section on the author's personal experience, a map of the Peninsula, and a sketch map showing Kafilah routes

  • Fluctuating settlement patterns in Bronze Age Sutherland

Lindsay Dunbar, C Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2008

Excavation of a well-preserved upstanding roundhouse revetted into a steep hillside at Navidale has revealed a structure with unusually sophisticated architectural traits dated to around 1400–1200 BC. The house was built within an agricultural landscape but its abandonment appears to have been linked to a cessation of agriculture within that landscape, possibly part of a wider environmental decline across northern Scotland

  • Redcastle, Lunan Bay, Angus

Derek Alexander, S Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2006•Cited by: 2

Cropmarks of a cemetery containing square- and round-ditched burials were excavated at Redcastle in 1997 and 1998. A total of sixteen graves was recorded: five in square barrows, two in round barrows and nine unenclosed graves. Another round barrow is clearly visible on the aerial photograph outside the excavation area. Preservation of the graves and the human remains therein varied considerably. Analysis of the bones identified two females, thre…

  • Excavations at Kaimes Hill, Ratho, City of Edinburgh, 1964 -72

    D D A Simpson, Richard Gregory et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2005•Cited by: 1

Kaimes Hill, City of Edinburgh, has been the focus for both antiquarian and modern archaeological research since at least the mid-nineteenth century and has produced evidence for activity dating from the Mesolithic through to the medieval period. The paper assimilates this evidence, provides a complete account of the excavations undertaken over the ramparts, `hut circles', prehistoric ritual and funerary monuments by D D A Simpson between 1964--7…

  • Excavation of two burials at Galson, Isle of Lewis, 1993 and 1996

Tim Neighbour, Carol Knott et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2002•Cited by: 3

Two burials of Iron Age date were recorded at Galson during rescue excavations in 1993 and 1996, as a result of erosion of the steep, north-facing sand-dune face, which rises over 6 m between the shingle beach and a field wall. This erosion face is the site of a well-known cemetery and settlement extending in date at least from the Iron Age to the Norse period. The burials are placed in the context of past discoveries at Galson and a brief consider…

  • Excavation of a cist burial on Doons Law, Leetside Farm, Whitsome, Berwickshire

Ciara Clarke, Ciara M Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2000

A cist burial containing the fragmentary remains of a (probably) female skeleton, a decorated Northern British/Northern Rhine Beaker, a group of flints, a fragmentary copper awl and some fragments of burnt bone and charcoal, was unearthed by ploughing in 1995. A sample of skeletal bone yielded a radiocarbon date of 2135-1935 cal BC at one sigma. Analysis of the pollen and spore content in an area of stained cist-floor sediment surrounding the ske…

  • An Atlantic roundhouse at Durcha, Sutherland

Andrew Dunwell, Derek Alexander et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2000

Recent excavations have confirmed the presence of an Atlantic roundhouse within a large mound at Durcha. The presence of a stone fortress at Durcha had been recorded in the eighteenth century, but following stone robbing in the nineteenth century no clear traces of the structure survived to allow confirmation of its identity. The difficulties of the identification and classification of such structures in Sutherland where little excavation has bee…

  • Edin's Hall fort, broch and settlement, Berwickshire (Scottish Borders)

Andrew Dunwell, Mike Cressey et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2000•Cited by: 1

A survey and excavations were undertaken in 1996 at Edin's Hall fort, broch and settlement — a monument in the care of Historic Scotland — in response to evidence of rabbit damage to the earthworks. The work has shown that the evolution of the site is considerably more complex than had been recognized hitherto. The broch may have been constructed during the lifetime of the settlement. The status and wealth of the site are discussed, and considere…

  • St Germains, Tranent, East Lothian

Derek Alexander, Trevor Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1999•Cited by: 1

Reports on investigations undertaken between 1978 and 1982 which revealed a penannular ring-ditch, ring-groove houses and a polygonal enclosure with antennae ditches. Evidence suggests that this enclosure was later replaced by a more substantial ditch and bank which then became levelled when a series of stone-paved houses were constructed. There are specialist contributions on: `Early Bronze Age artefacts' by Alison Sheridan (212); `Small finds' …

  • Excavation of a timber round-house and broch at the Fairy Knowe, Buchlyvie, Stirlingshire, 1975-8

Lorna Main, John Barber et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1999•Cited by: 2

Reports on work that revealed evidence of occupation of what was essentially a fortified farmhouse by a native elite group practising a mixed-farming economy. There are a number of specialist sections on: `Wooden posts' by John Barber (301--2); `Palaeobotanical remains' by W E Boyd (310--16); `Animal bone' by Catherine Smith & Archie Young (316--20); `Iron Age and Roman pottery' (321--31), `Objects of fired clay' (332--5) and `Industrial fired cl…

Richard Strachan, Ian Ralston et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1999•Cited by: 1

Discusses excavations which revealed evidence for multiple phases of activity including two burnt mounds, two round-houses, part of a probable ring-groove structure which may be a platform house and a metal-working area, with the main foci on the Late Neolithic, Bronze Age and early medieval periods. There are specialist contributions on: ceramics from all periods in the `Pottery report' by Trevor Cowie (70--5); `Coarse stone artefacts' by Caroli…
