Death, Grief and Collective Care in the Materialist Spirituality of a Forest Preschool
In a time when material reality appears disconnected from the spiritual world and meaning is sought through overconsumption of the Earth's material sphere, this study explores how death and grief are narrated as part of the ‘stories of the land’ that unite the material and spiritual worlds in a forest preschool in southeastern Finland. Additionally, the study investigates how shared narratives of death and grief contribute to the collective care …
Learning with(in) religious tradition. Navigating the existential in Islamic religious education
In this paper, we explore the educational purposes of Islamic religious education (IRE) and discuss IRE as a place for navigating the existential. We aim to explore the functions of IRE outside of identity policies or of instrumental use, such as inclusion in society or competences for the future. Towards this goal, we employ the conceptualisation of the three domains of educational purpose, subjectification, socialization and qualification, conc…
Grief as an existential interruption: Adults narrating their childhood grief
In this study, we examine how adults narrate and make meaning of their death-related childhood grief as an existential question of how to be with loss, and how to relate to a lost loved one. Death is a significant interruption in a child's life, and inevitably invites the griever to question not only the life of the deceased and its ending, but also one's own mortality. The data of this study consists of grief narratives written by university stu…
Emotional configurations of grief: Narratives from childhood
Being human involves encountering losses to which grief is a common response. No one can escape grief-it is the price of affection and love. In this paper, we aim to understand how grieving unfolds as described in university students' short narratives of their childhood. Applying a cultural-historical approach, especially the notion of emotional configuration, we explore the interplay of emotion, sense-making, and practice in grief-related childh…

This issue is discussed in the light of teachers’ professional autonomy and ethics, since these are two fundamental dimensions of teacher professionalism that are discussed a lot. The research was conducted using a qualitative attitude…

Of specific interest here is what students postulate as meaningful in their professional learning processes and why, and what kinds of directio…

The article critically observes the construction of certain positions and identities as part of the school discourse and the inclusive vs exclusive practices of language. The research material consists of classroom observations and staff interviews from two separate studies. The first study investigates two cases in separativ…
Thinking multicultural education ‘otherwise’ – from a secularist construction towards a plurality of epistemologies and worldviews
This article examines educational, political and philosophical perspectives on the concepts of worldview and religion in the context of multicultural education. Using a postcolonial and post-structural approach combined with theories that analyse the politics of secularism, we attempt to pinpoint key perspectives in the recognition of worldviews in the current discourse on liberal multiculturalism. We suggest that the liberal-secular foundation o…
