Die epistemischen und affektiven Ressourcen des Leidens – oder warum wir die Zukunft noch nicht verloren haben

Against Fusion Love and Recognition in Melanie Klein, Amy Allen and Kleist’s Penthesilea
In this paper, I discuss Amy Allen’s contribution to a social philosophy or critical theory of love. On the wake of Allen’s interpretation of Melanie Klein’s psychoanalytical theory, I distinguish two faces of love, aggressive love and caring, or, in Kleinian terms, depressive love. I moreover elaborate the implications of these ideas of love for a (critical) theory of recognition, focussing on the state of fusion or symbiotic union between ego a…
Love Troubles
Between Anger and Hope
Discussions around progress, that have always been at the core of critical social and political philosophy, have lately become particularly thorny, exposing a sort of double bind: arguments in favour of progress are unable to avoid positions that undermine progress itself, but rejection of progress risks giving in to reactionary, cynic or melancholic positions. In this paper, I formulate the hypothesis that the double bind depends on a sort of unh…
Ae c sthetic transformative experience. A pragmatist outline
How does emancipation from social oppression work and unfold? The paper is an attempt to deal with this question from an aesthetic point of view. By drawing on pragmatist resources, and more precisely on John Dewey’s aesthetic theory and on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, I discuss the critical and transformative potential of a special kind of aesthetic experience, namely ‘aecsthetic experience’. The paper unfolds i…

Love and the (Wrong) World. Adorno and Illouz on an Ambivalent Relation
Capitalism and the Nature of Life-Forms
The article critically discusses Rahel Jaeggi’s recent philosophical contribution to a critical theory of capitalism. The first part reconstructs Jaeggi’s account of Lebensform, life-form, that builds up the main ontological framework for addressing and problematizing capitalism intended not as an economic system but as a social whole. The second part focuses on the three different theoretical strategies that Jaeggi puts forward to detect and dea…
Love is a losing game
The article elaborates an account of exploitation in romantic love relationships. As a starting point, I borrow Vrousalis’ analytical Marxist definition of economic exploitation under capitalism. Second, I briefly discuss Federici’s conception of capitalist exploitation of women’s labour in the family and in the romantic couple. I introduce and discuss, then, Jónasdóttir’s theory of ‘love power’, which currently counts as the most elaborated crit…
The Ambiguity of Love
The paper sketches out an account of ambiguous and agonistic love by drawing on the work of Simone de Beauvoir, Axel Honneth and Hannah Arendt. To begin with, I reconstruct the ambiguity of love within the conceptual framework of a paradigm of recognition. I argue further that the social relation of love, understood as an intertwine between dependence and independence, entails a power dynamic. Insofar as the dynamic actualises as “power in concer…
Agonist Recognition, Intersections, and the Ambivalence of Family Bonds
John Dewey’s lectures in China, delivered at Peking University in 1919–1920, are currently available to us in two different forms: as a translation into English from a Chinese transcript of Dewey’s oral English talks, and as the notes Dewey wrote for himself as “plot outline” for the lectures. In the paper, I argue that a conjunct reading of the two texts conveys the unique opportunity to reconstruct Dewey’s outline of a critical social philosoph…
Why Love Kills
This article conceptually investigates a type of gender murder, “romantic femicide.” I understand this as the extreme form of violence that occurs as a result of men's incapacity to cope with their (female) partners’ autonomy and power. The incapacity is not merely an individual pathology but is rather rooted in the dynamic of recognition characterizing love under structural conditions of gender dichotomy. After having sketched out the current di…
Recognizing care, caring recognition
In this paper, I discuss the idea of democratic love from the perspective of gender equality. More precisely, I argue that a particular form of gender inequality, namely a gender-specific division of care labour, jeopardizes democratic love. In the first two sections of the article, I introduce Anthony Giddens' original idea of a 'democratization of the personal' and show how Axel Honneth has developed it by relying on the Hegelian notion of soci…
