Jessica Talbot, Cristina Poleacovschi et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2023

Puerto Rico has a long and complicated history with the US, and although the archipelago is no longer a colony, the colonial relationship remains embedded in US–Puerto Rico relations. In the disaster context, this historical legacy manifests as mismatches in power and place between where recovery is planned and policies are created (the federal US) and where disaster is experienced and recovery is carried out (Puerto Rico). This research investig…

    Scott Feinstein, Cristina Poleacovschi•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 22

Since 2015, over one million refugees sought refuge in Europe and around 70,000 refugees have been hosted in refugee camps in Greece. Refugees’ empowerment is threatened in these camps as they have restricted access to resources and decision making. This research argues that social capital plays an important role in refugees’ sense of empowerment. The research uses a mixed-methods case study of a refugee camp in Greece, including 20 interviews an…

The Syrian civil war led to mass migration and Europe becoming a potential site of refuge. How have Syrians experienced refuge in Europe? Drawing on 58 interviews with Syrian refugees in Germany, France, and Switzerland, we find that refugees continue to experience exclusion in all integration domains including those found as markers and means, social connections, facilitators, and foundations of integration . While our cases demonstrate that Syr…

Open Access•Kalynda Smith, Cristina Poleacovschi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2022

Compared to other groups, relatively less research has specifically addressed the retention of Latinx students in STEM disciplines. These students face many negative stereotypes about their group, especially related to their academic success, yet there is limited research regarding how microaggressions, subtle or ambiguous discriminatory behaviors, targeting Latinx students in engineering education settings impact their experience in those progra…
