The Prophet's sandals and image‐relics: Tracing a symbol
This article explores a revered relic of the Prophet Muḥammad and the ways in which its symbol was established and has evolved in the Sunni world. Four dimensions explain the symbolic power of his sandals. First, the symbol is normativised as a sign of the Prophet and his spiritual grace. Second, it is further validated through iterated though inexact histories. Third, as representations of the sandals have spread widely in the Muslim world, symb…
Islam beyond Borders: The Umma in World Politics
Assuming a central place in Muslim life, the Qur'an speaks of one community of the faith, the umma. This unity of the faithful is recognised as the default aspiration of the believer, and in the modern era, intellectuals and political leaders have often vied both to define, and to lead it. Based on case studies of actors such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and ISIS, James Piscatori and Amin Saikal consider how some appeals to pan-Islam prove useful, yet …
Conceptualising the Umma: An Introduction
Muslim societies, like all others, are inexorably interconnected with cultural exchanges, intimate political interactions and a degree of economic interdependence.2 Building on historical precedents, ‘Islam’ has seemed naturally cosmopolitan. Over time Muslims have developed a sense of interconnectedness, even an idealisation of unity, as seemingly contradictory trends unfolded – as states and parochial identities became entrenched in the Muslim …
Islam Beyond Borders: The Umma in World Politics
The prospect of a united Muslim world has long inspired both dreams and fears. Many Muslims regard the pan-Islamic community, the umma, as the embodiment of the spiritual kinship of the faith, but it has also often been assumed to be inherently antagonistic to adherents of other faiths. Questions over relations with the Other are mirrored by debates over what constitutes the acceptable contours of Islamic doctrine itself. Indeed, the umma has had…
Transnational Religion and Fading States
Focusing on the dilution of the state sovereignty, this book examines how the crossing of state boundaries by religious movements leads to the formation of transnational civil society. Challenging the assertion that future conflict will be of the "clash of civilizations" variety, it looks to the micro-origins of conflicts, which are as likely to arise between states sharing a religion as between those divided by it and more likely to arise within…
Muslim Travellers: Pilgrimage, Migration and the Religious Imagination
Pilgrimage, travel for learning, visits to shrines, exile, and labour migration shape the religious imagination and in turn are shaped by it. Some travel, such as pilgrimage, explicitly intended for religious purposes, has equally important economic and political consequences. Other travel, not primarily motivated by religious concerns and thus neglected by many scholars, nonetheless profoundly influences religious symbols, metaphors, practices a…
American Democracy Promotion in the Changing Middle East: From Bush to Obama
During the first decade of the twenty-first century, the United States found itself heavily involved in efforts to build democracy in two states in which US forces had been deployed to overthrow unappetizing regimes, namely the Taliban in Afghanistan and the regime headed by Saddam Hussein in Iraq. At one level, the exercise might have seemed relatively straightforward. In both countries, ordinary people had suffered at the hands of rulers whose …
Imagining Pan-Islam: Religious Activism and Political Utopias: Elie Kedourie Memorial Lecture
This lecture gives an overview of religious activism and political utopias. It begins by detailing the emergence of a political symbol, pan-Islam. The second section focuses on how Muslim politics today is partly pre-occupied with contestation over this symbol. Pan-Islam emerged as an idea and a symbol that is conditioned by modern contexts. It is also seen to be shamelessly used and manipulated, but is still able to exercise a pull on the modern…
Monarchies and Nations: Globalisation and Identity in the Arab States of the Gulf
Despite their small populations, the Arab states of the Gulf exercise an enormous and global influence. In most academic literature, however, they are treated as if their only importance were as counters on a strategic game board. This book takes a quite different approach. By combining the views of anthropologists, political scientists and others, it explores how the citizen populations of these states define themselves in a wider context. As el…
Order, Justice, and Global Islam
This chapter examines some of the conceptions of order and justice that are present in the Islamic world. It argues that many Islamic states have been willing to accommodate themselves to an international society based on the idea of sovereign equality. However, one of the impacts of globalization has been to shift the allegiances of some members of these states from territorially based political communities to those based on religious or cultura…

Contextualizing Islamic Fundamentalism
VIRTUAL INDUSTRY HAS SPRUNG UP in academic and policy circles over Samuel Huntington's 'clash of civilization' thesis. Most of the responses have been punishing critiques of its essentialist tendencies and arguments for more contingent and complex understandings of the role of culture and religion in international conflict and co-operation in the post-cold war era. Yet, curiously but perhaps not surprisingly, Huntingtons ideas have had particular…
