Over de concurrentie tussen -isatie en -isering in het Nederlands
This article examines the morphological status and use of the competing suffixes -isatie and -isering in Dutch. Previous hypotheses about possible semantic differences or differences in usage in Belgian and Dutch contexts are reviewed, and the competition between the two suffixes is studied from a comparative linguistic perspective. Special attention will be paid to the productive use of -isering. A central claim is that to make judgments about p…
Scholars and their metaphors
This article deals with the powerful role of metaphors in the process of Language Making throughout the history of linguistics. It departs from the assumption that metaphors play an essential role both in the formation of scientific theories and in common conceptions of language. We want to illuminate to what extent metaphors are involved in language ideologies, and we investigate their role in linguistic theory formation. After introducing diffe…
From Noun to Evaluative Adjective
In this study, we address the ways in which nouns can give rise to new adjectives in Dutch and German. More specifically, the focus is on words with an evaluative meaning that can be used in a wide range of morphological and syntactic constructions in recent (and informal) language. For example, the German noun Hammer ‘hammer’ can be used in Hammervorstellung ‘very good performance’ or hammer film ‘fantastic film’. In the literature, two distinct…

Als nah verwandte Sprachen zeigen das Niederländische und das Deutsche zwar vergleichbare Strukturen der Komposition und der Derivation, bei näherem Hinsehen sind es aber vor allem die vielfältigen Divergenzen, die ins Auge fallen. Im ersten Teil des Artikels werden versch…
Guest Editors' Preface
It is not uncommon for the naive native speaker of English to confuse German and Dutch. One reason for this lies in the English names for the languages, but another reason is that Dutch and German sound similar to the anglophone ear. Many, perhaps even most, university students of Dutch in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the anglophone world come to Dutch with a good knowledge of German and again, often draw parallels between their mother ton…
One Nation, One Language? The Case of Belgium
In this article the linguistic situation in Belgium and its historical development is discussed. The country has often been called a role model for the linguistic future of Europe because of its alleged success in granting equal rights to its French and Dutch language communities while preserving political unity. This paper, however, argues that Belgium is an example of a European region where the struggle for linguistic rights led from the estab…
