  • Combining elemental analysis and molecular techniques to characterize Ancient Egyptian mummification balms

Open Access•Marta Colmenares-Prado, Antonio Martínez Cortizas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

FTIR spectroscopy has been successfully used to characterize embalming materials from Egyptian mummies in a wide number of studies in the recent decades. Here, we have performed ATR-FTIR to 27 balm samples from seven Egyptian mummified heads curated at.

  • Mediterranean Parallels of a Psamtek Egyptian Scarab from El Toro Necropolis (Alcubillas, Ciudad Real, Spain)

Open Access•Luis Benítez De Lugo Enrich, José Luis Fuentes Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology•2026

This paper presents the study of a scarab found in the Necropolis of El Toro, located in the interior of Iberia. The scarab tomb is described, followed by a detailed morphological, typological, archaeometric (SEM-EDX analysis), and chronological analysis of the amulet, including absolute dating. The archeometallurgical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) of the metal pieces of the trousseau is also included. The piece shows signs of having been …

  • Examining the burial contexts and trauma patterns of fallen soldiers and civilian victims from the Spanish Civil War

Open Access•María Benito Sánchez, Miguel Mezquida Fenández et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Anthropological Practice•2021•References: 22

Every conflict referred to as a war results in the horror of loss and death. This is true of any war, and the Spanish Civil War is a good example. Many people disappeared and were never found again, mainly because nobody ever looked for them. There were several counteroffensives on the eastern war front in Spain's Levante region during 1938, which, although ending in Pyrrhic victories for the Republican Army, were forgotten for years, as were the…

  • The genomic history of the Iberian Peninsula over the past 8000 years

Open Access•Iñigo Olalde, Swapan Mallick et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2019

Genomics of the Iberian Peninsula Ancient DNA studies have begun to help us understand the genetic history and movements of people across the globe. Focusing on the Iberian Peninsula, Olalde et al. report genome-wide data from 271 ancient individuals from Iberia (see the Perspective by Vander Linden). The findings provide a comprehensive genetic time transect of the region. Linguistics analysis and genetic analysis of archaeological human remains…

  • Personal body ornamentation on the Southern Iberian Meseta

Open Access•Carlos P Odriozola, Luis Benítez De Lugo Enrich et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2015•References: 7
