Cognitive Behavioural Prevention of Suicide in Psychosis: A Treatment Manual
Psychological resilience in young and older adults
BACKGROUND: The goal of the current study was to investigate psychological resilience in the older adults (>64 years) compared with that of the young ones (<26 years). METHODS: Questionnaire measures of depression, hopelessness, general health and resilience were administered to the participants. The resilience measure comprised three sub-scales of social support, emotional regulation and problem solving. RESULTS: The older adults were the more r…
Resilience to suicidality: The buffering hypothesis
The role of defeat and entrapment in depression, anxiety, and suicide
Defeat and entrapment are psychological constructs that have played a central role in evolutionary accounts of depression. These concepts have since been implicated in theoretical accounts of anxiety disorders and suicidality. The current article reports on a systematic review of the existing research investigating the links among defeat, entrapment, and psychopathology in the domains of depression, suicidality, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTS…
Resilience as positive coping appraisals: Testing the schematic appraisals model of suicide (Sams)
Religious beliefs and religious delusions: Response to treatment in schizophrenia
It has been suggested that patients with strong religious beliefs or religious delusions have poor outcome from psychiatric treatment. The aim of the investigation was to establish if the patients’ shorter-term response to psychiatric treatment was affected by these factors. A quasi-experimental design was used, in which patients with schizophrenia were assessed soon after admission to hospital. They were categorised as (1) religious or not relig…
The validation of a religiosity measure for individuals with schizophrenia
Measures of religiosity validated for psychotic patients do not exist. This study sought to examine the psychometric properties of a modified version of the Religious Life Inventory (RLI) in this population. It was anticipated that religiosity would be affected by psychotic symptoms. The religiosity of patients with schizophrenia was assessed while symptoms were more evident and again after treatment, to evaluate changes in religiosity. Four fact…
Monitoring of intrusions in post‐traumatic stress disorder: A report of single case studies
The effect of monitoring on frequency and duration of intrusions, and on reported symptomatology in patients with a diagnosis of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was investigated. Six patients were asked to monitor their intrusions over a period of two months. The patients were reassessed after completing the monitoring and followed up after three months. Four patients recovered and no longer met criteria for PTSD, one patient was still expe…
Locus of control and cognitive behaviour therapy with mastectomy patients: A pilot study
A cognitive behaviour therapy programme was designed for use with mastectomy patients, and a pilot study performed to test the efficacy of the programme. This article reports the locus of control data collected during the pilot study and the relationship between these data and the clinical assessment measures. Lower chance scores at pre‐treatment are associated with greater clinical improvement as predicted. Surprisingly, however, there is an inc…
Knowledge of Sex-Trait Stereotypes: Effects of Age, Sex, and Social Class on Brazilian Children
The knowledge of sex-associated characteristics was investigated in children of northeast Brazil using 32 short stories representing stereotyped sex traits. Children of 5, 8, and 11 years from both upper and lower social classes acted as subjects. There was a general increase in knowledge of stereotypes with age, although the level of knowledge was less than found in previous investigations of children from the United States, England, and Ireland…
