  • A Contemporary Legend from Italy

    Steve Siporin•ARTICLE•Journal of Folklore Research•2008•References: 2

This legend describes how a romance goes awry when a young man proposes marriage by having a diamond engagement ring placed inside the hollow chocolate egg he gives his sweetheart for Easter. I first describe my attempt to discover the origin of the narrative and then I reflect on the reasons for its contemporary popularity. I find the reasons to be rooted in this legend’s seamless combining of local Perugian symbols with several layers of folklo…

  • Life Is Beautiful: Four riddles, three answers

    Steve Siporin•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2002•References: 5

Four riddles occur in the dialogue of Roberto Benigni's 1998 film, La vita è bella ( Life Is Beautiful ). Solutions to the first three are provided almost as soon as they are uttered, but a fourth riddle, spoken at the film's climax, remains unanswered. Exploring possible meanings of the fourth riddle illuminates the film's meaning. Although the riddles may seem to be relatively unimportant bantering between two of the major characters (Guido, th…

  • On Scapegoating Public Folklore

    Steve Siporin•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2000

The call to abandon the word folklore as the name for our discipline has apparently been abandoned itself - rather like the stories in which the villain meets the fate he thought had been prepared for his enemies. The discussion was fruitful, even reinvigorating, and although there were no villain or enemies, there were several heroes. Among those heroes, I would count Dan Ben-Amos, with his fine essay "The Name Is the Thing" (1998). In this essa…
