Post-‘Post-Fascism’ and Far Right Mainstreaming in Italy: Assessing Continuity Between the Italian Social Movement, National Alliance and Brothers of Italy
The mainstreaming of the far right is a defining feature of European politics, raising concerns that incorporating far right parties into democratic politics could lead to the normalisation of undemocratic ideas. This paper explores this contention in the case of Brothers of Italy, a radical right party with extreme right roots. Conceptualising mainstreaming as the result of moderation or normalisation, it assesses whether Brothers of Italy can f…
Common Sense as a Political Weapon: Populism, Science Skepticism, and Global Crisis‐Solving Motivations
This research examines the relationship between populist thinking and global crisis‐solving motivations concerning climate change and the COVID‐19 pandemic. Using data from five European countries (Switzerland, France, Finland, Greece, and Italy), we test a model where crisis‐related science skepticism—understood as the defense of commonsense knowledge against scientific expertise—mediates the association between populist thinking and crisis‐miti…
Divided we stand: Attitudes, social classes, and voting for the radical right after the Great Recession in Europe
Part of the literature identifies the core constituency of radical right parties (RRPs) in the so-called “modernization losers”. But while analysing the social bloc supporting RRPs, the literature often treats the matter as a monolithic bloc rather than focusing on the different expectations of such a heterogeneous electorate. Our findings indicate that political attitudes and other social characteristics influence the voting behaviour in differe…
The electoral system and electoral geography -why the Rosato law appeared to be proportional while it is not
The 2018 elections confirmed the tri-polar format of the party system, with three opposing aggregations, each of which has a majority (or at least enjoys considerably more support) in a specific area of the country. The paper shows that, in a way, the highly unequal geographical distribution of the vote is revealing of the main social factors underlying the choices of voters. In another respect, it masks the potential disproportionality of the el…
Radical right parties and European economic integration: Evidence from the seventh European Parliament
This article explores the differences in radical right parties' voting behaviour on economic matters at the European Parliament. As the literature highlights the heterogeneity of these parties in relation to their economic programmes, we test whether divergences survive the elections and translate into dissimilar voting patterns. Using voting records from the seventh term of the European Parliament, we show that radical right parties do not act a…
Un scrutin pour trois pays: La Nouvelle Géographie Politique Italienne Suite À L’élection Législative Du 4 Mars 2018
In this article we describe and analyse the results of the Italian General Election of March 4, 2018. In particular, we focus on the geographical differences in the scores distribution of the main political forces. We argue that, from this point of view, Italy appears as a tripolar-but-imperfect political system with two major poles (centre-right and M5S) and a non-competitive pole, the centre-left. We then observe the relationship between the di…
