  • Locating community participation in a water supply project-the Galanefhi Water Project (Eritrea)

Solomon Haile Gebremedhin, Francois Theron•ARTICLE•Anthropology Southern Africa•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Water projects, like sustainable development projects in general, often tend to become unsustainable because they are guided by top-down strategies which exclude the input, influence and ownership of projects by their beneficiaries. For attaining sustainable development, the social capital of communities must be harnessed—beneficiaries of development need to be conscientised through a process of establishing self-awareness that their indigenous k…

  • Etnisiteit en Kleurlingskap

    P V D P Du Toit, Francois Theron•ARTICLE•Politikon•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In South Africa there often exists a notion that the population categories defined by the Population Registration Act, no. 30 of 1950 represent ethnic groups. The basic argument presented in this paper is that neither the so‐called “objective” nor the “subjective” definitions of ethnicity justify such a conclusion. To grasp the full complexity of the nature of the South African population structure it has to be accepted that individual ethnic ide…

  • N Antwoord op: Etnisiteit en sogenaamde “Kleurlingskap” in perspektief

Pierre Du Toit, Francois Theron•ARTICLE•Politikon•1984•References: 2

This article is a rejoinder to criticism of our analytical perspective on ethnicity and ethnic group formation in South Africa. We reply (i) to the claim that the typology of ethnic concepts of McKay and Lewins (1978) relies entirely on the subjective dimension of ethnic identification, and ignores the role objective factors play in ethnic group formation; and (ii) comment on the relationship between minority groups and ethnic groups, with specif…
