  • Convictions and Penalties among Rescue and Non-rescue Nonhuman-Animal Hoarders

    Marion C Willetts•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2022•References: 2

The overarching purpose of this pilot study was to compare the likelihood of conviction and the imposition of penalties in nonhuman-animal hoarding cases among those affiliated with established animal rescues and those not affiliated. A secondary purpose was to examine what additional characteristics of hoarders and hoarding cases are associated with conviction and penalties. Manifest content coding was conducted on the media reports and court do…

  • An Exploratory Investigation of Companion Animal Custody Disputes following Divorce

    Marion C Willetts•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2021

The overarching purpose of this paper was to explore the legal resolution of companion animal custody disputes in the event of a couple’s divorce or dissolution of a cohabiting union. I conducted content analysis on court cases throughout the U.S. between 1944 and 2019 and on policies enacted between 2016 and 2019 in Alaska, California, Illinois, and New Hampshire, the only states to date that have implemented legislation stipulating how companio…

  • Perhaps It Was Too Soon

    Sprecher, Lucia F O’sulliban et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Early sexual debut has been a focus of social scientific research due to its association with adverse circumstances and negative outcomes. However, there has been a recent shift to considering not only chronological age, but also the degree to which the event is viewed to be optimally timed (i.e., the perception that it occurred at the "right time" versus too soon). The purpose of this study was to assess how individual/family background variable…

  • Combating Speciesism

    Marion C Willetts•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six students prior to an alternative break trip to a companion and farmed animal sanctuary, along with participant observation of all student trip participants ( n = 44) during the trip and at all pre- and post-trip events. Participants were overwhelmingly Anglo and female, and were enrolled at a Midwestern university. Results indicate that prior to the trip, the participants possessed minim…

  • Union Quality Comparisons Between Long-Term Heterosexual Cohabitation and Legal Marriage

    Open Access•Marion C Willetts•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2006•Cited by: 20•References: 15

A longitudinal analysis is conducted on the union quality of long-term cohabiting and legally married couples using data from both waves of the National Survey of Families and Households. An analysis of racially homogamous (Anglo-American and African American) couples indicates that the cohabitors and marrieds do not differ significantly with regard to their frequency of conflict, perceptions of equity, and relationship satisfaction, although age…

  • Parental Reports of Adolescent Well-Being

    Marion C Willetts, Nick G Maroules•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2005

We analyze data from the 1999 wave of the National Survey of America's Families (NSAF) to compare parental reports of the psychological well-being and attitudes toward school of 12- to 17-year-old adolescents residing with a cohabiting versus a remarried mother (maternal stepfamilies), and those residing with a cohabiting versus a remarried father (paternal stepfamilies). In maternal stepfamilies, cohabiting stepfathers report more positive adole…

  • Does Remarriage Matter

    Marion C Willetts, Nick G Maroules•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2004

We analyze data from the 1997 wave of the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth (NLSY) to compare well-being (delinquency, substance abuse, and behavioral/emotional problems) among 12 to 17-year-old adolescents living with a cohabiting mother and her partner versus a remarried mother and her spouse. The results indicate that maternal remarriage does not provide benefits over maternal cohabitation with regard to adolescent well-being, as no diffe…

  • An Exploratory Investigation of Heterosexual Licensed Domestic Partners

    Open Access•Marion C Willetts•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 17

In-depth telephone interviews were conducted in four cities in an exploratory study of 23 licensed cohabitors to determine why they have chosen to legitimize their intimate unions through domestic partnership ordinances, rather than through legal marriage. The cohabitors in this sample are pursuing these licensed partnerships to obtain an economic benefit (e.g., health insurance coverage for a partner); as a substitute for legal remarriage; to le…
