  • Navigating the swampy lowland

Open Access•Christine Galavotti, Tisha Wheeler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Cited by: 8•References: 34

BACKGROUND: Few models of how community mobilisation works have been elaborated in the scientific literature, and evaluation of the impact of these programmes on HIV and other health outcomes is extremely limited. Avahan, the India AIDS Initiative, has been implementing community mobilisation as part of its prevention programming with groups of high-risk individuals across six states since 2005. PURPOSE: To articulate a programme theory and evalu…

  • Learning about scale, measurement and community mobilisation

Open Access•Tisha Wheeler, Usha Kiran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 38

Debates have raged in development for decades about the appropriateness of participatory approaches and the degree to which they can be managed, scaled and measured. The Avahan programme confronted these issues over the last 7 years and concludes that it is advantageous to manage scaled community mobilisation processes so that participation evolves and programming on the ground is shaped by what is learnt through implementation. The donor (Bill &…

  • Sexually Transmitted Infection Control with Sex Workers

    Richard Steen, Gina Dallabetta•ARTICLE•Reproductive Health Matters•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 46

Sex workers have high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), many of them easily curable with antibiotics. STIs as co-factors and frequent unprotected exposure put sex workers at high risk of acquiring HIV and transmitting STIs and HIV to clients and other partners. Eliminating STIs reduces the efficiency of HIV transmission in the highest-risk commercial sex contacts--those where condoms are not used. This paper reviews two STI treatme…

  • Health care seeking behaviour for sexually transmitted diseases among commercial sex workers in Morogoro, Tanzania

Anne Outwater, Anne H Outwater et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2001

A qualitative study was conducted in a community of 100 female, self-employed commercial sex workers (CSWs), in Morogoro township, Tanzania. Data was gathered through key informant interviews and open-ended questionnaires. Respondents had extensive experiential knowledge of STDs and HIV/AIDS. They pursued several different avenues in attempting to prevent STDs including eating nutritiously to enhance immunologic status, using condoms, and vaginal…

Open Access•Munkolenkole Kamenga, M Claudes Kamenga et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2000

  • The decentralization of syphilis screening for improved care in Jamaican public clinics. Collaborative Working Group on Decentralized Syphilis Screening

    F M Behets, A Brathwaite et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 5

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the decentralization of syphilis screening for improved care in Jamaican public clinics. METHODS: One of every five serum samples tested at the six peripheral sites was frozen and retested at the central laboratory in Kingston. Patient files and laboratory logbooks were compared over a 3-month period. RESULTS: Between May 1993 and December 1994, 15.5% of 32913 patients with sexually transmitted diseases and 8.3% of…

  • Targeted Intervention Research on Sexually Transmitted Illnesses

    Deborah Helitzer-Allen, Hubert Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1996

The targeted intervention research (TIR) approach was developed to meet the need for better preprogram or "formative" research to develop more effective interventions. In the past, much of this formative research was conducted by consultants who provided short-term technical assistance to program managers. This separation of programs and research resulted in high-quality research, often delivered too late or not sufficiently focused to be useful …
