  • Sustainability: A History, Revised and Updated Edition

    Jeremy L Caradonna•BOOK•Sustainability•2022

  • Sources of Sustainability in the Early Modern World

    Open Access•Jeremy L Caradonna•CHAPTER•Sustainability•2022

This chapter explores the early history of sustainability, both the concept and the word itself. The main argument is that sustainability, as a concept, and later as a movement, emerged out of a crisis in forestry that occurred concurrently in numerous parts of the world, from Western and Central Europe to Japan, South Asia, the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean. The 18th century witnessed a growing awareness about environmental change and humankin…

  • The regenerated chacra of the Kichwa-Lamistas: An Alternative to Permaculture

    Open Access•Jeremy L Caradonna, Frederique Apffel-Marglin•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This article compares Western permaculture theory and practice with the indigenous agricultural system of the Kichwa-Lamistas in the Department of San Martin in High Amazon Peru. It draws on indigenous theory and collaborations with the Kichwa-Lamistas to argue that the bioculture of the latter represents an alternative not only to modern, industrialized agriculture but also to permaculture. The article profiles the agroecological system used by …

  • The French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe, 1769-1794

    Jeremy L Caradonna•ARTICLE•French History•2013

It is a great pleasure to review ‘The French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe, 1769–1794,’ which is a richly crafted database that ‘maps the trade of the Société Typographique de Neuchâtel’ (STN). If the STN sounds familiar, it is because Robert Darnton rescued that obscure Swiss publishing house from obscurity in a series of works, including the The Business of Enlightenment (1979) and The Literary Underground of the Old Regime (1982). Today, …

  • The Progressive Poetics of Confusion in the French Enlightenment

    Jeremy L Caradonna•ARTICLE•French History•2012

John C. O’Neal has written an excellent book on the uses of the concept of confusion in the French Enlightenment. O’Neal begins by deconstructing the traditional image of the Enlightenment as a period obsessed with reason, rationality, and order—in short, Ernst Cassirer’s conception of the Age of Reason. It is not that he denies the existence of debates surrounding critical analysis, the politics of reason, and what we might call the taxonomic sp…

  • The Enlightenment in Practice: Academic Prize Contests and Intellectual Culture in France, 1670-1794

    Jeremy L Caradonna•BOOK•The Enlightenment in practice•2012•Cited by: 6

Public academic prize contests—the concours académique—played a significant role in the intellectual culture of Enlightenment France, with aspirants formulating positions on such matters as slavery, poverty, the education of women, tax reform, and urban renewal and submitting the resulting essays for scrutiny by panels of judges. This book draws on archives both in Paris and the provinces to show that thousands of individuals—ranging from elite m…

L'article propose une histoire culturelle du concours academique dans la France du XVIIIesiecle. Il met en avant trois arguments complementaires. • Une histoire de l'identite: France, 1715-1815

    Jeremy L Caradonna•ARTICLE•French History•2008

Vincent Denis has produced an engaging and highly topical history of identification in early modern France. After all, the issue of passports, visas and the sans-papiers remains at the centre of an ongoing and highly controversial debate in the European Union about measures to reduce Europe's swelling number of illegal immigrants. In a sense, Denis has laid out the historical background to the discussion by tracing the growth of personal identifi…
