  • Refining the Chronology of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Settlement: The Re-dating of Residential Sites on the Eastern Rim of Rano Kau

Open Access•Mara A Mulrooney, Mara Mulrooney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2021

    P. C. McCoy and colleagues carried out a comprehensive survey and test excavations at selected sites in the southwestern portion of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in 1968. This included the excavation of a rectangular house (hare; 1-187) and a nearby stone-lined earth oven (umu pa‘e; 1-186) on the eastern rim of Rano Kau. A single radiocarbon date of AD 770 ± 230 from 1-187 was subsequently accepted by some researchers as support for the theory of earl…

  • Geochemistry and Technology of Basaltic Glass Artefacts from an Embedded Source and Two High-altitude Base Camps in the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex, Hawai‘i

    Open Access•Patrick C Mccoy, Marshall I Weisler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2015

Located at the base of an escarpment at ~3720 m elevation, in the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex, Hawai‘i Island, is a small outcrop of basaltic glass that was utilised by adze makers for at least several hundred years as a source of toolstone for the manufacture of small, expedient flake tools. A test excavation of this previously unknown source/quarry was undertaken in 1976 to obtain a sample of artefacts to compare with what appeared to be lith…

  • Thorium dating of toolstone procurement strategies, production scale and ritual practices at the Mauna Kea adze quarry complex, Hawai'i

Patrick C Mccoy, Richard Nees et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 4

230 Thorium dates on unweathered pieces of branch coral from the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex suggest that a significant part of this quarry, the largest in the Hawaiian Islands, was in use by the mid-14th to mid-15th centuries AD. The dates also point to the high probability of labor intensive mining of subsurface toolstone by this date, in addition to the much easier strategy of procuring toolstone from the surface. While there is abundant evi…

  • Th dates for dedicatory corals from a remote alpine desert adze quarry on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i

    Open Access•Patrick C Mccoy, Marshall I Weisler et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 6

The authors show how sites in upland Hawai'i may be dated using uranium series radiogenic measurements on coral. The sites lie in a quarry, inland and at high altitude, with little carboniferous material around, and radiocarbon dating is anyway problematic here for the first millennium. Freshly broken coral had been transported to these sites, remote from the sea - no doubt for ritual purposes. Giving a date in the fifteenth century with an error…

  • Science and Sensitivity: A Geochemical Characterization of the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex, Hawai'I Island, Hawaii

    Open Access•Peter R Mills, Steven P Lundblad et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 30

The Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex is the largest-known prehistoric quarry in the Pacific Basin. The main extraction areas are located at an extreme altitude (3,800 m), near the summit of Hawaii's tallest mountain. The Mauna Kea summit region and the quarry are considered by many Hawaiians to be a sacred landscape and archaeologists must consider the ethical tensions involved in conducting Western science in these areas. Although provenance studie…

    Open Access•Patrick C Mccoy, Paul L Cleghorn•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•1988•Cited by: 13•References: 6

The excavations of seven archaeological sites on the island of Santa Cruz (Nendö), undertaken during the second phase of the Southeast Solomon Islands Culture History Program in 1977–78 are briefly summarized and the results discussed in terms of a local and regional culture historical framework. The local sequence, characterized by an earlier ceramic period and a later aceramic period, appears to have begun some 3000 years ago with a Western Lap…

  • Stone-lined earth ovens in Easter Island

    Open Access•Patrick C Mccoy•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1978•References: 1

Prior to the recent description of stone-lined ovens in Hawaii (Hendren, 1975, 133, 139), such ovens had not been reported elsewhere in Polynesia, and as a result some attention has been placed on the origin of the urnu pae. An undocumented claim has been made for the probable Peruvian source of the Easter Island stone-lined oven (Heyerdahl, 1968, 1g5), but in fact cultural origin is still in question because local innovation by the undeniably Po…
