    Open Access•Sara Kintzle, Leslie P Schnyder et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2025•References: 25

Joining the Army, a new installation or a new unit are times of significant stress for Soldiers. Support provided during these transitions can affect unit cohesion, Soldier well-being, retention, and mission readiness. This research aimed to explore how Soldiers experience the Army onboarding process as well as perceptions of the welcome experience. Nineteen focus groups were conducted with 120 Soldiers using a semistructured interview protocol. …

  • Arrests, Mental Health Outcomes, and Discharge Status in U.S. Military Veterans

Open Access•Nicholas Barr, Sara Kintzle et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2024

Most U.S. military service members are discharged routinely, but about 15% receive non-routine discharges. Little is known about how patterns of arrests prior-to and in-service relate to neuropsychological symptoms acquired through military service, or how these symptoms and patterns are associated with discharge type. We investigated latent group differences in post-9/11 era veterans’ patterns of arrests; examined mental health-related predictor…

  • An Intersectional Analysis of Women's Experiences of Inclusion in the United States Army

  • Making Ends Meet

    Open Access•Nicholas Barr, Vicky Albert et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2024•References: 14

Over 36% of post–9/11 era veterans have a disability, but little research has examined wounded veterans’ finances. We investigated main and interaction effects of income sources and demographic, military, and mental health characteristics on household poverty and deep poverty to better understand wounded veterans’ financial outcomes. Data were drawn from the 2018 Wounded Warrior Survey ( n = 33,067). Two logistic regression models investigated di…

  • Factors Related to Exclusion in the U.S. Army

    Open Access•Sara Kintzle, Eva Alday et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2023•References: 40

The promotion of inclusion in the U.S. Army requires an understanding of how and why exclusion occurs. As exclusion can have deleterious impacts at both and individual and organizational level, reducing exclusive behaviors can have positive effects on Soldiers and the Army. To explore exclusion in the Army, 19 focus groups were conducted with 120 active-duty enlisted Soldiers. Two rounds of thematic analysis revealed four themes related to exclus…

  • Preliminary Exploration of the Relationship between Veteran Family Membership, School Climate, and Adverse Outcomes among School-Aged Youth

Open Access•Kathrine Sullivan, Jessica Dodge et al.•ARTICLE•Education and Urban Society•2022•References: 61

Little is known about the functioning of children in veteran-connected families, who may experience a unique constellation of stressors including exposure to parental mental health symptoms and unemployment. Further, research has not previously considered the role of school climate in counteracting these stressors for veteran-connected students. This preliminary study examines the relationship between veteran parent’s mental health and employment…

  • Comparing the training effectiveness of virtual reality and role play among future mental health providers

    Open Access•Hazel R Atuel, Sara Kintzle•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

The results suggest that both RP and the VC-T are equally effective, which opens the possibilities of implementing the VC-T as a training tool that has greater reach compared with RP. As more graduate programs offer an online version of their traditional on-ground coursework, the VC-T is an opportunity to have 1 training platform for both on-ground and online students. • Homelessness Among Veterans

Open Access•Carrie L Lucas, Taylor Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Society for Social…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Objective: The current literature does not account for how homeless experiences in combination with military sexual assault (MSA) are associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and physical health among military veterans. Method: The survey sample included 251 female and 1,249 male U.S. Armed Forces veterans in San Francisco, CA, and Chicago, IL, who reported their housing status during the past 3 months. Three subgroups em…

  • Effects of Perceived Public Regard on the Well-Being of Military Veterans

Open Access•Fred E Markowitz, Sara Kintzle et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Mental Health•2020

Many military veterans face considerable challenges reintegrating into civilian life. Evidence suggests the general public holds conflicting attitudes toward veterans. This study examines how perceived public attitudes play a role in veterans’ mental health and well-being. Drawing from and extending interactionist theories of self-concept, stigma, and mental health recovery, we develop and estimate models for the relationships between internalize…

  • Can Mindfulness Help to Predict Veterans’ Mental Health Service Utilization

    Open Access•Nicholas Barr, Sara Kintzle•ARTICLE•Social Work•2019•References: 6

Post-9/11 era military veterans are at high risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, but less than half of veterans who screen positive for these disorders seek mental health treatment. Self-stigma of mental illness has emerged as a core barrier to mental health service use (MHSU) in this population. Mindfulness is associated with attention control, nonjudgment, and reduced self-stigma in civilians, but associations between P…

  • Validation of the Warrior Identity Scale in the Chicagoland Veterans Study

Steven L Lancaster, Sara Kintzle et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2018

The present study examined the psychometric properties of a measure of military identity in a sample of U.S. military members. Confirmatory factor analysis provided additional support for the multidimensional nature of military identity. Correlational analyses indicated that the domains of military identity were strongly related to postdeployment adjustment as well as other indicators of psychosocial health. Of importance, the relationships betwe…

  • PTSD and Physical Health Symptoms Among Veterans

    Kathrine Sullivan, Nicholas Barr et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 39

This study examines the association between veterans’ physical and mental health symptoms and perceptions of adverse child and relationship functioning. Veteran responses to the PHQ-15, assessing physical health; the PCL-C, assessing PTSD symptoms; and reports of family challenges were drawn from a countywide veterans survey. Findings indicate physical health (OR = 1.048; 95% CI, 1.002, 1.098) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatol…

  • Haiti and the Earthquake

Open Access•Ed Risler, Sara Kintzle et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

For approximately 35 seconds on January 10, 2010, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the small Caribbean nation of Haiti. This research used a preexperimental one-shot posttest to examine the incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated trauma symptomatology from the earthquake experienced by a sample of adult Haitians who were living in temporary shelters located in “tent cities” in Port-au-Prince and a c…

  • Capacity Building for Gerontological Services

Sara Sanders, Jeanne A Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Practice•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 13

As the number of elders in our nation increases, it becomes critical to develop programs and services designed to meet their biopsychosocial and physical needs. This article reports on one component of a mixed methods evaluation study of adult day service programs in Iowa, a critical home and community-based service for elders. After providing a description of their individual services, adult day services (ADS) administrators identified barriers …
