Sex for Shelter? Power, Precarity, and Sexual Propositions Among Male Migrants in European Transit Zones
Background Racialized migrant men are frequently framed as deviant and hypersexual, obscuring the complexity of their intimate and sexual relationships during and upon migration. This risk narrative is partially reproduced in academic research, where the focus overwhelmingly remains on sexually transmitted infections among migrant men. Little is known about how sexual encounters unfold during migration journeys, where precarious legal and materia…
Waiting and wanting to desire
This paper explores migrant men's sexual and affective desires, the constraints on their sexuality, and how unmet needs are managed during migration and transit across Europe. Drawing on participant observation and repeated in-depth interviews with 39 migrant men in Brussels and Calais, the analysis shows that sexuality is neither suspended nor fully enacted, but shaped by legal precarity, material insecurity, homelessness, the volatility of mobi…
I just want the pain to go away
There is increased recognition of the need to engage with psychosocial diversity in the psychotherapeutic treatment of sexual violence. Using a decolonial feminist community psychology lens, this paper explores how religious practices shape the trauma experiences of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse in the Cape Flats region of South Africa. Drawing on data from qualitative semi-structured interviews and integrative trauma-informed care se…
Lived experiences of migrant men witnessing and surviving sexual violence in European transit spaces
BACKGROUND: Despite increased scholarly attention to sexual violence, victimization among migrant men and boys remains under researched. This study aims to explore 1) migrant men's views on and understandings of sexual victimization, 2) their own experiences with surviving and witnessing sexual violence during their past and ongoing migration journeys and 3) the consequences of such victimization and their coping behaviors. RESULTS: Participant o…
Lived experiences of the sexual and reproductive health consequences of parkinson’s disease and their impact on health-related quality of life in Ethiopia
Barriers and facilitators to sexual health help-seeking in patients with early-onset Parkinson’s disease
Globally, up to 88% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience one or more types of sexual health (SH) problems. However, nearly 80% of PD patients with sexual dysfunction (SD) did not seek formal help. Evidence lacks on why PD patients with SD do not seek help in socio-culturally diverse countries like Ethiopia. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to identify the barriers and facilitators of SH help-seeking among early onset PD patients …
Barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer screening among under- and neverscreened women in Flanders, Belgium – a qualitative study on community and healthcare providers’ perspectives
To improve screening participation in Flanders, different screening strategies tailored to a diversity of women are needed
We Hold on and Have Patience
On arrival in the European Union, most migrants who apply for asylum stay often for extended periods of time in asylum centres, putting parenting practices under pressure. Despite an increased interest in the functioning of migrant families, the perspectives of migrant fathers remain marginalized in practice, policy, and scientific research. Very little is known about how migration impacts fathering practices and how migrant fathers may best be s…
Screening for and Disclosure of Domestic Violence during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic left no one untouched, and reports of domestic violence (DV) increased during the crisis. DV victims rarely seek professional help, yet when they do so, they often disclose it to their general practitioner (GP), with whom they have a trusting relationship. GPs rarely screen and hence rarely take the initiative to discuss DV with patients, although victims indicate that offering this opportunity would facilitate their disclos…
Factors Related to Police Reporting in Sexual Assault Care Centers
Few victims of sexual assault (SA) report to the police. Research on the role of support persons in victims' reporting is sparse. We address this gap by examining the association of victim, assailant, victimization incident, and support characteristics with reporting rates among victims attending sexual assault care centers (SACCs). Logistic regression results show that type of SA, delay between SA and presentation at SACC, and presence of an inf…

The Elephant in the Room – A Critical Interpretive Synthesis of Older Adults’ Sexuality
Objectives: This study aimed to explore past studies that have focused exclusively on the sexuality of adults older than 65 from a positive public health approach. Methods: We performed a critical interpretive synthesis, starting with the literature review on sexual behaviors in later life, adding policy documents on aging sexuality, and bringing new perspectives. Results: Older adults continue to be sexually active. Healthcare professionals lack…
The Implication of the First Wave of Covid-19 on Mental Health
The social conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic had a great potential to affect the mental health of individuals. Meta-analyses indicate a rise in these problems in these periods among general populations, patients and health professionals, even with substantial heterogeneous results. This paper examines mental health impacts specifically during the first wave of COVID-19. An online survey was conducted with a Portuguese convenience sample…
Victimization of Applicants for International Protection Residing in Belgium
Background: Sexual violence (SV) literature on applicants for international protection (AIPs) shows that they are at high risk of victimization. The study objectives are to provide an exploratory overview of the occurrence of SV in AIPs in Belgium and their help-seeking behavior (HSB). This overview is crucial to develop prevention strategies and care paths focusing on providing adequate care to AIP SV victims in Belgium. Methods: Quantitative da…
Minority Identity, Othering-Based Stress, and Sexual Violence
This study contributes to our understanding of the relationship between minority identification, OBS, and SV. Studying both specific and common SV vulnerabilities and outcomes within specific societal subgroups and the general population may inform policy makers when allocating resources to those interventions with the largest societal impact
Time Does Not Heal All Wounds”
Sexual violence (SV) has an important impact on mental health. Childhood sexual abuse is linked to internalising disorders in later life. In older adults, SV occurs more often than previously believed. Moreover, health care workers lack the skills to address SV in later life. Studies researching the mental health impact of lifetime SV, i.e., SV during childhood, adulthood, and old age, are lacking. Between July 2019 and March 2020, 513 older adul…
An assessment of the proportion of LGB+ persons in the Belgian population, their identification as sexual minority, mental health and experienced minority stress
The proportion of persons who identified as LGB+ was twice as large as the proportion of persons who identified as a minority based on their sexual orientation. LGB+ persons show poorer mental health compared to heterosexual persons. This difference was unrelated to minority stress, sociodemographic differences, minority identification, or the importance attached to minority characteristics
Locked up at home
It is advisable to make extra efforts to improve well-being when maintaining sanitary measures by providing appropriate assistance and helping households struggling with increased or acute stress to install positive coping strategies - especially in larger households with children between six and 17 years. Besides, our findings draw attention to the clustering of risk of child and adult violence exposure in lockdown situations as well as to the p…
Mental health and domestic violence in LGB+ persons during lockdown measures in Belgium
Background: To contain the COVID-19 pandemic, governments worldwide restricted social and physical contact by issuing lockdown and social-distancing measures. Yet, lockdown measures may induce mental health problems and increase the occurrence of domestic violence (DV). We examine mental health and DV in lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, and asexual (LGB+) persons under lockdown. Methods: An online self-report questionnaire on relationships, str…
Prevalence and Associated Factors of Sexual Victimization
Sexual victimization is a major public health, judicial, and societal concern worldwide. Nationally representative and comparable studies are still lacking. We applied a broad definition of sexual violence, including hands-off and hands-on victimization, and behaviorally specific questions to assess sexual victimization. Lifetime and 12-month prevalence estimates were obtained that are representative of the Belgian general population aged 16 to 6…
Domestic violence in Mozambique
Within services providing care to survivors of DV, a scarcity of guidelines and protocols exist, compromising the quality and standardisation of care. The existence of guidelines and protocols was regarded as a strength, however its implementation is still problematic. There was also recognition for the need to strengthening by governmental and non-governmental entities the defined policies and strategies for DV prevention and control into practi…
Big Boys Don’t Cry
Sexual victimization is typically presented as a gender-based problem involving a female victim and a male offender. Science, policy, and society focus on female victims at the expense of male victims. Male sexual victimization is thus understudied compared with female sexual victimization. By performing a critical interpretive synthesis of research papers, policy documents, and gray literature ( N = 67) published in four electronic databases fro…
Universal cervical cancer control through a right to health lens
BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer claims 311,000 lives annually, and 90% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Cervical cancer is a highly preventable and treatable disease, if detected through screening at an early stage. Governments have a responsibility to screen women for precancerous cervical lesions. Yet, national screening programmes overlook many poor women and those marginalised in society. Under-screened women (called har…
The critical interpretive synthesis
The importance of the critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) to review quantitative and qualitative research, and to critically develop new theory, is increasingly recognized and evidenced by the increase in published CIS reviews. However, the flexibility embedded in the method hampers its implementation and exacerbates concerns about trustworthiness. This paper seeks to determine the extent of transparent reporting and soundness of execution in p…
Separating newcomers
This paper focusses on the organisational responses of secondary schools to newly arrived migrant students. In Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium), as in many other European regions, newly arrived students are placed in segregated classes that aim to prepare them for integration in mainstream education. Deriving from, on the one hand, academic critiques on the principle of segregated classes and, on the other hand, the autonomy that sch…

Hidden violence is silent rape
Although women, young people and refugees are vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) worldwide, little evidence exists concerning SGBV against refugees in Europe. Using community-based participatory research, 223 in-depth interviews were conducted with refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands. Responses were analysed using framework analysis. The majority of the respondents were either perso…
Sexual violence and sub-Saharan migrants in Morocco
BACKGROUND: The European Union contracted Morocco to regulate migration from so-called “transit migrants” from Morocco to Europe via the European Neighbourhood Policy. Yet, international organisations signal that human, asylum and refugee rights are not upheld in Morocco and that many sub-Saharan migrants suffer from ill-health and violence. Hence, our study aimed at 1) investigating the nature of violence that sub-Saharan migrants experience aro…
Sexual health is dead in my body
Refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in Belgium and The Netherlands are at risk of sexual ill-health. Incorporated cultural norms and attained education are important determinants to address in desirable sexual health promotion. Yet, as their legal status demonstrates to be the key determinant, the prime concern is to alter organizational and societal factors linked to the Belgian and Dutch asylum system. Refugees, asylum seekers an…
What the eye does not see
In Europe, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants are more vulnerable to sexual victimisation than European citizens. They face more challenges when seeking care. This literature review examines how legal and policy frameworks at national, European and international levels condition the prevention of and response to sexual violence affecting these vulnerable migrant communities living in the European Union (EU). Applying the Critical …
Assessing reported cases of sexual and gender-based violence, causes and preventive strategies, in European asylum reception facilities
BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a widespread public health problem and a violation of human rights rooted in gender and power inequities. Refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants living in European asylum reception facilities (EARF) are especially vulnerable to SGBV. To contribute to closing the gap on systematic and accurate evidence on SGBV, we aim to explore reported cases of SGBV, causes and preventable measures described …
Towards a more integrated and gender-sensitive care delivery for victims of sexual assault
The Sexual Assault Care Centre model aims to counter most of the current sexual assault health services' weaknesses and threats hampering an integrated care for victims of sexual assault. Further research and training of health professionals are however required in order to tune this integrated form of care to sexuality and gender-based differences in victims' already multi-faceted healthcare needs
Current care for victims of sexual violence and future sexual assault care centres in Belgium
BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a global health problem. After ratifying the Convention of Istanbul in 2016, this Belgian study was set up to map the perspective of victims of rape on the current sexual violence care provision in Belgium and to inquire on their need for more specialised and holistic care in future Sexual Assault Care Centres. METHODS: Sixteen rape victims participated in this sub-study. A mixed-method design (questionnaire, in-dep…
