  • Metamorphic Imagery in Ancient Chinese Art and Religion

    Elizabeth Childs-Johnson, John S Major•BOOK•Metamorphic Imagery in Ancient…•2023

Metamorphic Imagery in Ancient Chinese Art and Religion demonstrates that the concept of metamorphism was central to ancient Chinese religious belief and practices from at least the late Neolithic period through the Warring States Period of the Zhou dynasty. Central to the authors' argument is the ubiquitous motif in early Chinese figurative art, the metamorphic power mask. While the motif underwent stylistic variation over time, its formal prope…

  • Ancient China: A History

    John S Major, Constance A Cook•BOOK•Ancient China•2016

Ancient China: A History surveys the East Asian Heartland Region – the geographical area that eventually became known as China – from the Neolithic period through the Bronze Age, to the early imperial era of Qin and Han, up to the threshold of the medieval period in the third century CE. For most of that long span of time there was no such place as "China"; the vast and varied territory of the Heartland Region was home to many diverse cultures th…

  • Tool Metaphors in the Huainanzi and Other Early Texts

    John S Major•CHAPTER•Huainanzi and Textual Production…•2014

This chapter examines the role of tools as a topos in the Huainanzi . The first and longest looks at a number of tool metaphors in the text shows that they exhibit such a wide range of meanings and applications that the text itself can fairly be summarized by means of the tool metaphors. The second part looks comparatively at tool metaphors in other Warring States and early Han texts, and shows that those texts vary greatly in the degree to which…

  • The Troublemaker. Michael Scott and his lonely struggle against injustice, by Anne Yates and Lewis Chester

    John S Major, John Major•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2007

In their attitude to Africa, and especially to South Africa, some 20th-century Anglican clerics were famously militant. We already have the lives of two such men, Archbishop Joost de Blank of Cape Town and Bishop Ambrose Reeves of Johannesburg, both written by John Peart-Binns. Most recently, there have been the studies of Father Trevor Huddleston by Robin Denniston, and of Canon John Collins by Denis Herbstein. Now comes the long-anticipated bio…

  • Defining Chu: Image and Reality in Ancient China

Barry B Blakeley, Li Ling et al.•BOOK•Defining Chu•2004•Cited by: 3

Scholars agree that the "southern" culture of China, roughly identifiable with the state of Chu during the period between 700 and 200 B.C.E., is of great importance in the subsequent development of Chinese culture. Early Han artists and writers from the first century B.C.E. were encouraged to preserve "exotic" and "barbaric" Chu images and songs as an antidote to the harsh laws of the Qin. This somewhat disparaging view of the Chu has persisted t…

In this volume Donald Munro, author of important studies on early and contemporary China, provides a critical analysis of the doctrines of the Sung Neo-Confucian philosopher Chu Hsi (1130-1200). For nearly six centuries Confucian orthodoxy was based on Chu Hsi's commentaries on Confucian classics. These commentaries were the core of the curriculum studied by candidates for the civil service in China until 1905 and provided guidelines both for per…

It seemed appropriate to broaden the discussion to include the term wu-hsing , to provide some lexical-historical background, and to share the sense of the conversation with our colleagues.)
