Mariette’s Newly Released Documents and the Chronology of the Apis Bulls
The Louvre Museum recently placed online Mariette’s notebooks from the mid 19 th century which include information on the find-spots of stelae from the Lesser Vaults of the Memphis Serapeum, the underground tomb complex of the Apis bulls at Saqqara. Some of these stelae name the reigning pharaoh and/or give dates for the bulls. The tombs had been ransacked but it seems that enough stelae remained close to their original positions to help determin…
Scarabs of Sheshi at Tell El-ajjul, Contra Kempinski
The find spots of eight scarabs of the Hyksos Pharaoh Sheshi from Tell el-Ajjul in southwest Palestine, excavated by Petrie, are re-examined in detail and found not to agree with the levels attributed to them by Aaron Kempinski in 1983. He argued that these scarabs related to the founding of City II, but some of them actually came from the earlier City III. This may have implications for the correct relationship between two transitions, that from…
Dating Anomalies in the Archaeology of the 7th Century BC
Two recently published sets of radiocarbon dates, one from Mesopotamia and one from Anatolia, gave anomalous results. On the basis of historical analysis, both sets were expected to date to the 7th century BC. However, the 14 C results were more than a century older than this. We tested samples from an Egyptian mummy, also historically dated to the 7th century BC, to see if such discrepancies were more widespread at this time. We did not find evi…
A Note on Ramesses IV and 'Merneptah' at Beth Shean
Some faience plaques from Beth Shean have been attributed to Ramesses II and are said to come from the temple of Level VII. It is more likely that they name Ramesses IV and were foundation deposits for the temple of Level VI. An amulet, supposedly naming Merneptah, is no longer readable.

The Roles of Government a Participant's Persective
Hasluck is unusual in the lengths he went to the define the responsibilities of the various offices in which he was involved. Many of the functions and processes of government have changed since Hasluck was an active participant in the political process. Interest groups have increasingly influenced political decision‐making, organisations external to the public service now play a greater role in influencing the development of public policy, the o…
The Mother Theme in Valentin Rasputin
In the early 1980s two Russian critics, once leading figures in the world of letters in the Soviet Union and now living in emigration, crossed swords over the state of Russian today. They were Yurii MaFtsev and Andrei Siniavskii, and the topic of their disagreement was, to use Maftsev's term, intermediate literature (promezhutochnaia literatura), works published officially in the Soviet Union which were light years away from hack writing, yet who…
