  • Data-Driven Approach to Understanding Complex Urban Phenomena

    Open Access•Muieen Cader, T W Yen et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2024•References: 5

Cities are increasingly recognized as complex systems, emerging through conditional and history-dependent urban processes. To understand a complex urban phenomenon to the point where we can act on it, we need a quantitative yet holistic approach. In this paper, we report on a preliminary study on the gentrification of H Street NE in Washington, DC, USA. Popular accounts claim that this started in 2016, with wealthier new residents displacing poor…

  • Bilingual language experience and children's social-emotional and behavioral skills

He Sun, Nurul Taqiah Yussof et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The current study examines the relationship between bilingual children's dual language experience (i.e. language input, language output and vocabulary proficiency), and their social-emotional and behavioral skills. Data were analysed from 805 Singaporean bilingual preschoolers (ages 4; 1–5; 8 years), who are learning English and either Mandarin (n = 551), Malay (n = 105), or Tamil, (n = 149). A parent questionnaire and standardized vocabulary tes…

  • The World as Seen from Venice (1205-1533) as a Case Study of Scalable Web-Based Automatic Narratives for Interactive Global Histories

Andrea Nanetti, Siew Ann Cheong•ARTICLE•The Asian review of World Histories•2016•References: 2

This introduction is both a statement of a research problem and an account of the first research results for its solution. As more historical databases come online and overlap in coverage, we need to discuss the two main issues that prevent 'big' results from emerging so far. Firstly, historical data are seen by computer science people as unstructured, that is, historical records cannot be easily decomposed into unambiguous fields, like in popula…

  • Provenance and Validation from the Humanities to Automatic Acquisition of Semantic Knowledge and Machine Reading for News and Historical Sources Indexing/Summary

Andrea Nanetti, Chin-Yew Lin et al.•ARTICLE•The Asian review of World Histories•2016

This paper, as a conlcusion to this special issue, presents the future work that is being carried out at NTU Singapore in collaboration with Microsoft Research and Microsoft Azure for Research. For our research team the real frontier research in world histories starts when we want to use computers to structure historical information, model historical narratives, simulate theoretical large scale hypotheses, and incent world historians to use virtu…

  • Digital Maps and Automatic Narratives for the Interactive Global Histories

Siew Ann Cheong, Andrea Nanetti et al.•ARTICLE•The Asian review of World Histories•2016•References: 2

We describe a vision of historical analysis at the world scale, through the digital assembly of historical sources into a cloud-based database, where machine-learning techniques can be used to summarize the database into a time-integrated actor-to-actor complex network. Using this time-integrated network as a template, we then apply the method of automatic narratives to discover key actors (‘who’), key events (‘what’), key periods (‘when’), key l…

  • Regime Shifts in Balinese Subaks

    J S Lansing, Siew Ann Cheong et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 15

Ecosystems may undergo nonlinear responses to stresses or perturbations. Hence there can be more than one stable state or regime. It is not known whether alternate regimes also occur in coupled social-ecologica-l systems, in which there is the potential for intricate feedbacks between natural and social processes. To find out, we investigated the management of rice paddies by Balinese farmers, where ecological processes impose constraints on the …
