  • Is the Supreme Court’s Legitimacy Vulnerable to Intense Appointment Politics? Democrats’ Changed Views Around Justice Ginsburg’s Death

    Open Access•Douglas Glick, David M Glick•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Courts•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death near the end of the Trump presidency set off a fight in which Republicans moved to rapidly replace her over Democrats’ objections. I use a survey that was in the field at the time to assess whether this period affected the Court’s legitimacy. I find that Democrats who responded in the days just after Justice Ginsburg’s death saw the Court as less legitimate than those who responded shortly before it. These find…

  • The principle of least action and teleological explanation in physics

    Open Access•Douglas Glick•ARTICLE•Synthese•2023•References: 9

The principle of least action (PLA) has often been cited as a counterexample to the dominant mode of causal explanation in physics. In particular, PLA seems to involve an appeal to final causes or some other teleological ideology. However, Ben-Menahem (Causation in science, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2018) argues that such implications no longer apply given that PLA can be recovered as limiting case from quantum theory. In this paper,…

Open Access•Katherine Levine Einstein, Douglas Glick et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2022•Cited by: 15•References: 8

Recent research has demonstrated that participants in public meetings are unrepresentative of their broader communities. Some suggest that reducing barriers to meeting attendance can improve participation, while others believe doing so will produce minimal changes. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted public meetings online, potentially reducing the time costs associated with participating. We match participants at online public meetings with administra…

  • Generalism and the Metaphysics of Ontic Structural Realism

    Open Access•Douglas Glick, David Glick•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Ontic structural realism (OSR) claims that all there is to the world is structure. But how can this slogan be turned into a worked-out metaphysics? Here I consider one potential answer: a metaphysical framework known as ‘generalism’ (Dasgupta [2009], [2016]). According to the generalist, the most fundamental description of the world is not given in terms of individuals bearing properties, but rather, general facts about which states of affairs ob…

  • Learning from others

    Open Access•Douglas Glick, David M Glick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Models of decision-making with outcome uncertainty are common in political science and related fields. Recent work in flagship journals has challenged canonical work by modeling outcome uncertainty as Brownian motion. This theoretical innovation has resonated because it is highly tractable and captures intuitively important realities of many decisions in ways that earlier models cannot. As theoretically attractive as the new models are, they have…

  • Dangerous noncompliance

Douglas Glick, Douglas J Glick et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology and Medicine•2010•References: 4

Prevention of illness has become a central theme in debates over strategies to reduce healthcare costs. Severe mental illness poses a special challenge to the paradigm of rational prevention, the principal strategy of which is adherence to pharmacological therapies. With the contraction in the US of in-patient psychiatric care from the 1960s onwards, the mentally ill have become more visible among the homeless and among those caught up in the pen…
