  • Subjective distance to public institutions in urban and rural contexts and community safety concerns

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Territory Politics Governance•2025•References: 15

This study examines how subjective proximity to public institutions relates to community safety concerns in Sweden, using original survey data linked to neighbourhood contexts. Results reveal a nonlinear pattern: proximity to institutions is associated with reduced concern in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, but increased concern in affluent areas – particularly in relation to police. Urban–rural location does not significantly moderate this relatio…

  • From single-issue to sustained Influence

    Open Access•Felicia Andreassen, Gissur Ó Erlingsson et al.•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2025•References: 53

This study aims to advance the understanding of new political party longevity by examining an overlooked phenomenon: challengers formed exclusively to run for local elections ('local parties', 'local lists', or 'independents'.) Drawing on original data and official election statistics, we analyse how formation patterns, issue scope, and governance participation affect their longevity. Our analyses reveal partly counterintuitive findings that some…

  • Examining the relationship between women’s descriptive political representation and women’s possibility to participate in civil society across regime types

Open Access•Anna Ehrhart, Susanne Wallman Lundåsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2024•References: 44

This study examines the link between women’s representation in national parliaments and their possibility to participate in civil society. Utilizing panel data from the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) dataset, covering 1975–2019, we investigate how the presence of women in parliaments influences the possibility for women to participate in civil society, especially in non-liberal democratic settings. The results indicate a positive association post…

  • Rurality and discontent

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 26

In Sweden, the anti-establishment party, the Sweden Democrats, has seen growing support in the past four parliamentary elections. This rise is thought to be part of a broader trend where disenchanted voters in remote areas increasingly back anti-establishment parties. The present study investigates whether residing in a rural or peripheral district within a municipality increases the individual likelihood of voting for the Sweden Democrats in loc…

  • Intergroup Contacts, Neighborhood Diversity, and Community Trust

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2023

Intergroup contacts can occur in many different places but are often studied only limited to a specific context. This study contributes with data that taps intergroup contacts that occur in both the private and the public sphere, using data from a large-scale survey directed towards individuals nested within 36 different municipalities and over 1,250 different neighborhoods with varying levels of visible minorities. The results also showed that j…

  • Perceived fairness of intra-municipal cohesion politics

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen, Gissur Ó Erlingsson•ARTICLE•Political Geography•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 42

This paper examines whether beliefs that local decision-makers are perceived to favour certain groups or districts over others, are linked to anti-establishment party preferences, and whether living in an urban or rural area affects this relationship. By taking stock of an original survey of Swedish respondents stratified into densely (urban) and sparsely (rural) populated districts, our results reveal geographical polarisation even within munici…

  • Geographical Tensions Within Municipalities? Evidence from Swedish Local Governments☆

    Open Access•Gissur Ó Erlingsson, Richard Öhrvall et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 14

When Sweden transformed its geography of local government in 1952 and 1962-1974, the number of municipalities was reduced from 2,498 to 278. The reforms were infused by the 'central place theory,' which aimed to identify a larger town as the 'local capital' (centralort) for each municipality. The centralort became the municipalities' political and administrative center, responsible for providing public services to surrounding settlements. Taking …

  • Variations in vaccination uptake

Open Access•Elis Carlberg Larsson, Emanuel Wittberg et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Facing the threat of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines are important for limiting the spread and consequences of the pandemic. In this study, we provide a descriptive overview of the within-country variations of vaccine rates by examining to what extent voter turnout, support for an anti-establishment political party (Sweden Democrats), presence of first-generation immigrants, and Evangelical religiosity are associated with the within-count…

  • Intergroup contacts in civil society organizations and trust

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 21

When dealing with the complex policy issue of how to maintain social cohesion within an increasingly diverse society, decision-makers often view civil society organizations as important actors that can provide opportunities for intergroup contacts and pathways for immigrants to integrate. The present study uses data from a large-scale survey directed toward individuals nested within 36 different local communities and over 1250 different neighbour…

  • Religious Participation and Civic Engagement in a Secular Context

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The aim of the present study is to investigate the potential link between religious participation and civic engagement in Sweden. Religious participation probably plays a different role in a secular context compared to a context where religion and politics are more intertwined. First, do those who regularly attend religious services in Sweden volunteer and participate in charitable giving more often compared with those who do not? Second, are tho…

  • When state‐level institutions cannot tell the whole story

    Open Access•Gissur Ó Erlingsson, Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Governance•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 43

The lion's share of comparative research on corruption, good governance, and quality of government (QoG) has been cross‐country. However, a growing body of literature has begun to explore within‐country variations observed at the subnational level regarding corruption and social trust. The existence of such variations implies that state‐level institutions are not capable of telling the entire story and that quality of subnational‐level institutio…

  • Patterns of civil society organisations’ attempts to influence local politicians and local civil servants

    Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 42

The present study aims to analyse these tensions and investigate the importance of the local political context with regard to the ability of local civil society organisations to influence local politicians and local public administrators. This paper contributes new knowledge on the question of what types of relational and contextual factors affect the outcome of attempts to exert influence in local communities. The study investigates whether the …

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Swiss Political Science Review•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 46

The aim of this paper is thus to further explore the relationship between involvement in voluntary associations at the community level and specific forms of political participation. We pose the following questions. Do voluntary associations contribute to specific forms of individual political participation in a consociational context? Do voluntary associations encourage forms of political participation aimed at directly interacting with the polic…

  • Voluntary Associations Within the Local Political Context

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 17

A cornerstone of democracy is the capacity of citizens to influence political decisions either through elections or by making their will known in the periods between elections. The aim of the present study is twofold: (1) to explore what factors inherent of the voluntary associations that determine the perceived success in their attempts to influence policy and (2) to investigate what role the composition of the local government have on the perce…

  • Debating Future Harmonization of European Union VAT Regulations

    Open Access•Susanne Wallman Lundåsen•ARTICLE•Nonprofit Policy Forum•2012•References: 4

The article discusses how the introduction of common European Union tax (VAT) regulations may affect the voluntary sector in Sweden. Historically nonprofit organizations in Sweden have enjoyed tax exemption given that their activities are considered to be of a common good purpose. The Commission of the European Union considers the tax exemption to be too generous in the case of Sweden and that it may distort competition in the free market. The pr…

  • Three Forms of Interpersonal Trust

Open Access•Dag Wollebæk, Susanne Wallman Lundåsen et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Political Studies•2012•Cited by: 27•References: 43

Social trust is usually treated as a dichotomy between particularized and generalized trust. In this article it is argued that a third distinct form, community trust, is neither particularized nor generalized and bounded in space rather than persons. Factor analysis of survey data from 33 Swedish municipalities (N = 6,453) distinguishes between particularized, generalized and community trust. Furthermore, regression analyses show that the three t…

Na ciência política. Nas teorias sobre capital social e cultura política, enfatizando sua importância para a democracia, a confiança tem sido considerada uma variável essencial para a compreensão das sociedades.
