African-American Exploration in West Africa: Four Nineteenth-Century Diaries
As its title suggests, this book reproduces James L. Sims and George L. Seymour's diaries of their voyages into the interior of Liberia in 1858, and Benjamin J.K. Anderson's assessment of the Liberian and Guinean hinterland in the late 1860s and early 1870s. The sketchy historical introduction makes the volume unsuitable for most undergraduates, but those with some knowledge of the area will find the carefully annotated diaries fascinating. Seymo…
A Land and Life Remembered: Americo-Liberian Folk Architecture
Historical Dictionary of Liberia
Originally formed to harbor freed slaves and Americans returning to Africa, Liberia once was a land of hope. That was shattered by a long Civil War that shook its very foundation. Today's Liberia is glimpsed in this second edition. Building on the first edition, this updated volume focuses on the personalities, from the founders of Liberia, to the soldiers who are responsible simultaneously for destruction and the hope of stability. Along with th…

Who Are the Kran/Guere and the Gio/Yacouba? Ethnic Identifications along the Liberia-Ivory Coast Border
Scholars working in Africa through the years have been faced with the problem of how to identify and differentiate one group of people from another. One of the bases for classification has been to establish linguistic boundaries, a method which has been part of the traditional anthropological means of distinguishing one “tribe” from the next. Recently others have pointed out the dangers of compartmentalizing peoples purely on linguistic grounds, …

The Manipulation of Traditional Political Structures among Coastal Peoples in Western Liberia during the Nineteenth Century
Little work has been done in an attempt to understand the dynamic quality of political structures in western Liberia. This paper documents the lives of three political leaders and demonstrates how their accession to power was based on the manipulation of the traditional political strcture in a way that made use of old categories of power in a new way. Once this process is understood, it is possible to view other individual's attempts at gaining p…

Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race
A Bibliography of Liberian Government Documents
This bibliography is the first attempt to establish a comprehensive listing of the various types of documents which the Liberian government has published. That it is not complete, goes without saying. Only time and further discoveries will make it so. In addition, certain of the gaps which occur are due to the nature of some of the material. Some parts of the series were never duplicated for mass distribution; rather, they remain in manuscript fo…
