Purpose The aim of this paper is to better understand European consumers' behaviour in relation to Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs), so as to provide insights to support their development as part of a sustainable food system. • Collaboration for Sustainable Intensification: The Underpinning Role of Social Sustainability

    Open Access•Sophie Wynne‐jone, John Hyland et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 43

Sustainable Intensification (SI) has been popularised in recent years as an approach seeking to balance the potentially conflicting demands of enhancing agricultural outputs with reducing the negative impacts arising from the current food system. Proponents have argued that SI can benefit from collaboration between farmers, but understanding is limited by a lack of data on current collaborative practices. Questions have also been raised as to whe…

  • Alexander’s Satraps of Media

    John Hyland, John O Hyland•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient History•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 5

After the conquest of the Achaemenid empire, Alexander of Macedon entrusted numerous provinces to Iranian satraps, many of whom had administrative experience under the earlier Persian kings. Modern scholarship has highlighted Alexander’s subsequent elimination of Iranian governors and replacement of most with Macedonians or Greeks, explaining the retention of a handful as the result of their superior loyalty. This study differs by exploring the I…

  • "Reading between the "posts: Systemic violence and the trope of hybridity in the postcolonial novel

    John Hyland, John O Hyland•ARTICLE•Journal of Postcolonial Writing•2013•References: 17

The late-20th-century convergence of post-structural, postmodern and postcolonial theories has engendered a critical discourse network that privileges hybridity. These accounts contend that it (re)inscribes the agency of minority subjects, destabilizing hegemonic discourses, but, paradoxically, hybridity has become a stabilizing trope for – as well as the dominant way to read – the postcolonial novel. This essay discusses three postcolonial novel…

  • "The Desertion of Nicarchus the Arcadian in Xenophon's "Anabasis

    John Hyland•ARTICLE•Phoenix•2010

Xenophon twice mentions an Arcadian named Nicarchus, a wounded soldier at 2.5.33 and a deserting officer at 3.3.5. Both passages may refer to the same man, although his wound must have been fatal. It is likely that the deserters carried Nicarchus with them, a testament to the emotional bonds between Greek soldiers. Xénophon cite par deux fois un Arcadien nommé Nicarche, soldat blessé à II, 5, 33 et officier déserteur en III, 3, 5. Il se peut que …
