    Open Access•Eunice Sueli Nodari, Zephyr Frank•ARTICLE•Revista Tempo e Argumento•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Zephyr Frank, Whitney Berry•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American geography•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 8

We construct an individual-level data set of partnership contracts in late-nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro to study the determinants of contract terms. Partners with limited liability contributed more capital and received lower draws for private expenses and lower profit shares than their unlimited partners. Unlimited partners in turn received higher-powered incentives when they contracted with limited partners than when they contracted with un…

Datasets regarding occupation, real property ownership, and slaveholding are intersected and social change experienced by artisans resident in the diverse neighborhoods of the city is analyzed. The story of one tinker in particular is pursued to illustrate the major chan…

    Open Access•Lyman L Johnson, Zephyr Frank•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2006•Cited by: 6

Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, the leading cities of the South Atlantic, experienced substantial growth in wealth holding during the first half of the nineteenth century. In this article, we argue that this growth is best interpreted in a broad, comparative framework, which examines these cities in relation to their internal demographic and institutional arrangements and to their external links to the Atlantic World. Our research emphasizes thr…

  • Wealth Holding in Southeastern Brazil, 1815-60

    Zephyr Frank•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2005•Cited by: 15

Southeastern Brazil underwent a series of profound transformations over the course of the first half of the nineteenth century. Rio de Janeiro, the capital-in-exile of the Portuguese Empire, became the capital of a newly independent but also monarchical Brazil. The city was transformed by urban growth, a massive influx of African slaves, and the rise of wealthy merchants and coffee planters to the head of local society.1 Beyond the capital, other…

Open Access•Zephyr Frank, Zephyr Lake Frank•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2001

One of the central issues in Latin American political history is the role played by oligarchies. In the case of Brazil, students of oligarchy have focused on elite family networks and coronelismo, the often violent manifestation of oligarchic politics at the local level. Drawing on the substantial body of literature on the family in Latin America, this essay proposes an interpretation of oligarchical politics in which changing family structures i…

In order to examine the relation between exports and inequality, this article first estimates per-capita income, exports, and other indicators of economic development in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Manuscript data are analyzed to measure and interpret three kinds of inequality: of income, of total wealth, and of landholding. The results suggest that exports and foreign ownership contributed far less to inequality than is imagined in dependency theory
