Reclaiming the margins in environmental research
European research policy aspires to “spread excellence”, yet Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) actors from Southern and Central-Eastern Europe (SE/CEE) rarely occupy agenda-setting roles. In the context of academic capitalism, anchoring analysis examines how marketised competition, network centrality, and epistemic valuation shape meaningful participation, including leadership/coordination, control over work packages/budgets, and agenda influe…
Missing the humanities? Prioritising affective, imaginative, transformative, critical and human dimensions in transitions research
Unstable bridges—exploring the possibilities for “in between” spaces amidst divergent narratives in environmental governance
Social-ecological systems increasingly face polarization dynamics that challenge environmental governance. Such polarization implies the development of opposing narratives with limited interaction, each framing environmental problems and solutions in distinct ways. In this study, we analyze a case of narrative polarization around the eutrophication crises of the Mar Menor lagoon in Spain, focusing on how proposed solutions are narrated to address…
Tales on co-response-ability in times of environmental polarization
In this paper I explore societal polarization as a challenge to environmental governance and sustainability transformations. I focus on how processes of knowledge co-production can be used as transformative avenues in highly polarized environmental disputes. I investigate the case of nonpoint driven eutrophication in the Mar Menor Lagoon, Spain, where the interplay of divergent epistemic, political, and affective processes exacerbates societal di…
Whose waters, whose nutrients? Knowledge, uncertainty, and controversy over eutrophication in the Mar Menor
This work explores the role of knowledge claims and uncertainty in the public dispute over the causes and solutions to nonpoint-driven overfertilization of the Mar Menor lagoon (Spain). Drawing on relational uncertainty theory, we combine the analysis of narratives and of uncertainty. Our results show two increasingly polarized narratives that deviate in the causes for nutrient enrichment and the type of solutions seen as effective, all of which …
Quantitative Storytelling
Innovations are central instruments of sustainability policies. They project future visions onto technological solutions and enable win-win framings of complex sustainability issues. Yet, they also create new problems by interconnecting different resources such as water, food, and energy, what is known as the "WEF nexus." In this paper, we apply a new approach called Quantitative Storytelling (QST) to the assessment of four innovations with a str…
Co-creating narratives for WEF nexus governance
The literature on the water–energy–food nexus has repeatedly signaled the need for transdisciplinary approaches capable of weaving the plurality of knowledge bodies involved in the governance of different resources. To fill this gap, Quantitative Story-Telling (QST) has been proposed as a science for adaptive governance approach that aims at fostering pluralistic and reflexive research processes to overcome narrow framings of water, energy, and f…
