  • Un lamarckisme réticent

    Open Access•Pietro Corsi•ARTICLE•Revue européenne des sciences…•2024

  • A Chair for Two

    Open Access•Pietro Corsi•CHAPTER•Darwin au Collège de France•2020

The history of science has always experienced a certain degree of difficulty in accepting the “history” part of its name. Even the more sociologically oriented colleagues appear not to be very successful in freeing themselves from the idea that “science” is, and has always been, a well-defined and coherent body of actors and practices. Almost inevitably, successive generations of historians, together with national and international professional a…

  • J utta S chickore . About Method

    Open Access•Pietro Corsi•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

Jutta Schickore’s About Method is a dense volume and at times difficult to read. It starts with the author’s premise that the “experimental turn” allegedly experienced by the history of science at large over the last two decades has failed to consistently address narratives about method offered by the scientists themselves. The historiography on the subject of experimentation in early modern England, Schickore explains, has been mostly concerned,…

  • After the Revolution

Pietro Corsi•CHAPTER•Practice of Reform in Health,…•2017

A century and a half later, in revolutionary France, the two issues were again at the forefront of heated epistemological, linguistic and political debates. This chapter shows how political considerations were also responsible for the embarrassed silence on the issue of the relationship between linguistic and scientific innovation that followed the consolidation of Napoleon's power after 1800. Though the economic situation improved over the follo…

  • What do you mean by a periodical? Forms and functions

    Open Access•Pietro Corsi•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The word ‘periodical’ immediately calls to mind huge stacks of bound volumes neatly arranged on library shelves. Yet, in historical terms, it would be hard to claim that ‘periodical’ is a word endowed with a definite and univocal connotation. Even the criterion of ‘periodicity’ leaves a lot out of account. Forms historically assumed by periodicals often envisaged regular schedules of appearance, but this was often more of a wish than a reality. T…

To the envy of scholars trying their best to elicit interest in the history of continental geology, it appears that British colleagues have decided to establish their firm leadership in the field with a salvo of recent publications, ranging from books and article…

  • Lamarck

    Open Access•Pietro Corsi•BOOK•Lamarck•2001

At the end of the XIXth century, zoologists sketched the history of evolutionary ideas in Italy, through the works of G. Gautieri, M. Foderà, F. A. Bonelli and F. С. Marmocchi. An analysis of their writings and a comparative critical assessment of the information available on their activities, has questioned the label « lamarckian » attributed to them. Contemporary naturalistic debates have allowed to reveal the dimensions of the Italian debates …

    Open Access•Pietro Corsi•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1978•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Recently there has been considerable revaluation of the development of natural sciences in the early nineteenth century, dealing among other things with the works and ideas of Charles Lyell. The task of interpreting Lyell in balanced terms is extremely complex because his activities covered many fields of research, and because his views have been unwarrantably distorted in order to make him the precursor of various modern scientific positions. Ma…
