  • Grandmother, Birth Assistant, Godmother. Grandparents and Newborns in a Spanish Mountain Village (Pedro Bernardo, Ávila, 1850-1861)

    Open Access•Wolfram Aichinger, Walburga Plunger•ARTICLE•Memoria y Civilización•2025

Where a grandmother was alive, she took a very active part in the care of her grandchildren, from the very beginning of their existence. There is considerable evidence for this thesis from Castilian rural communities, rooted in longstanding modes of life and with family structures that encouraged close interaction between the generations. Drawing on mid-19th century parish registers from Pedro Bernardo (Ávila) this case study analyses the ratio o…

    Open Access•Wolfram Aichinger•ARTICLE•Memoria y Civilización•2023

Emergency baptism refers to the number of infants born with little chances of survival. The logical place to look for this type of baptism seems to be the baptismal register. However, to get a complete picture, an examination of registers of deaths is necessary. This is the conclusion drawn from registers kept by the parish priest of Pedro Bernardo (Ávila) from 1845 to 1860. These books provide surprising data which urge for a revision of current…

  • Manos y materia.

    Open Access•Wolfram Aichinger, Alice-Viktoria Dulmovits•ARTICLE•Revista Historia Autónoma•2020

During the 17th century, there is a steady increase of references to emergency baptism in Spain. These references facilitate important insights into the circumstances of childbirth. The data reviewed in this paper mostly stems from the parish registers of San Justo y Pastor and San Pedro de Barajas, and they cover the years from 1611 to 1663. This information reveals some tendencies regarding the number and ratio of infants born in precarious con…

  • Midwife Diplomacy. The Recruitment of a Midwife for Empress Margarita María Teresa de Austria (1666-1673)

    Open Access•Wolfram Aichinger, Christian Standhartinger•ARTICLE•Memoria y Civilización•2020

During her stay in Vienna, from 1666-1673, empress Margarita María Teresa de Austria, who was of Spanish origins, gave birth four times and died when she was pregnant with a fifth child. The question of what midwife would best serve her was repeatedly discussed at the highest diplomatic level. The reputation of these midwives depended not only on their performance in the delivery room. Royal midwifery was linked to culture and language, to the in…

  • Childbirth Rhythms and Childbirth Ritual in Early Modern Spain, together with some Comments on the Virtues of Midwives

    Open Access•Wolfram Aichinger•ARTICLE•Hipogrifo Revista de literatura y…•2018

Childbirth in Early Modern Spain can be viewed as an area where ignorant midwives and cruel doctors ruled over terrified women who, deprived of all choices, were condemned to passively endure the ordeal of parturition. Medical and judicial sources seem to strengthen this vision.Yet, when we apply Mary Douglas’s theory of ritual, another picture emerges which might be just as valid for wide sections of social experience. Consequently, this articl…
