  • “My Reading Life”

    Open Access•John A Weaver•ARTICLE•International Review of…•2025

In this article, I outline the academic life of reading, what it demands, and what it has become for too many—an evasion of thinking. I discuss the crisis that the evasion of reading has caused and how the contemporary university has promoted this crisis. I rely on established critics of reading and academic work (J. Hillis Miller and Isabella Stengers) to think myself out of this crisis and to maintain high standards for living an intellectual l…

  • Serres’ science

    John A Weaver, John Weaver•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this article I explore Serres’ idea of science and how it impacted his overall work. This approach to understanding Serres’ idea of science is much like working with Nietzsche. I look at the areas Serres viewed as the dangers of science including what he referred to as a tsunami of data and the primary focus on methods. I end with Serres third way of inventive science

  • Serres and the university

    John A Weaver, John Weaver•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2021•References: 1

Michel Serres was a successful scholar who made a living within the university on two continents. However, he also viewed the university with great trepidation and tried to warn young scholars against falling victim to the university culture that encouraged a scholar to become a critic and not do original work. In place of the current university system, Serres offers an alternative vision that I refer to as the Diogenes University

Our aim for this special issue of Cultural Studies-Critical Methodologies is to engage with current influential texts in Science Studies, addressing the urgent need to rethink the role of the sciences in transdisciplinary possibilities for social inquiry. In this introductory essay, we underscore the political stakes of this kind of work, and we focus on a few key themes that run across the collected articles, situated as they are within what sci…

  • Life Out of Sequence: Data-Driving Life and Science Studies

    Open Access•John A Weaver, Thiago Ranniery•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2020•References: 12

This article focuses on Hallam Stevens' work Life out of Sequence: A Data-Driven History of Bioinformatics and stresses the important process of data generation and how this process has now become an issue, in some fields, beyond human control. We suggest the best way to approach the proliferation of data is to adopt an onto-epistemic position. We further explore the rise of an algorithmic society and the problem 'gaps' created in date generation…

    John A Weaver, Nathan Snaza•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2016•Cited by: 28•References: 8

This essay defines and critiques ‘methodocentrism’, the belief that predetermined research methods are the determining factor in the validity and importance of educational research. By examining research in science studies and posthumanism, the authors explain how this methodocentrism disenables research from taking account of problems and non-human actants that are presumed to be of no importance or value in existing social science research meth…
