Foreign Correspondence in the Early Telegraphic Era: The Herald , the Tribune, and the 1848 Revolutions
In 1848, political revolutions were breaking out all over Europe simultaneously while new technological advancements were having significant and profound impacts on news gathering practices abroad. New forms of communication and transportation, including the telegraph, the railroad, and the ocean-going steamship, meant the faster transmission of news and a wider spirit of cooperation between competing, penny press newspapers that resulted in shar…
Race War Flares Up: Chicago’s Swedish Press, the Great Migration, and the 1919 Riots
This study of the three large Swedish-language weeklies in Chicago examines how they covered the city’s African-American community during the latter half of the 1910s, a time when blacks migrated to the North in huge numbers. In Chicago, the result was that the African-American population almost tripled between 1910 and 1920. Little of that was visible in the columns of the weeklies, however, with only a handful of items telling readers that blac…
Before Journalism Schools: How Gilded Age Reporters Learned the Rules
Journalism courses at American universities were started in the 1890s, yet the news-reporting practice that characterizes mass media in the United States today began to take shape decades earlier, and Randall S. Sumpter's Before Journalism Schools examines how reporters acquired the skills necessary to do their job in the absence of formal academic instruction. Sumpter uses a variety of sources, including autobiographies, trade journals, guideboo…
Metis and the Medicine Line: Creating a Border and Dividing a People
Born of encounters between Indigenous women and Euro-American men in the first decades of the nineteenth century, the Plains Metis people occupied contentious geographic and cultural spaces. Living in a disputed area of the northern Plains inhabited by various Indigenous nations and claimed by both the United States and Great Britain, the Metis emerged as a people with distinctive styles of speech, dress, and religious practice, and occupational …
An NHL Touch”: Transnationalizing Ice Hockey in Sweden, 1994–2013
During the 1994-95 ice hockey season in Sweden, one of the teams in the highest division, Luleå, treated fans to an innovation: instead of merely entering the ice as in years past, players flew out of a gigantic bear maw, to the accompaniment of a pounding rock beat. The idea was not original, however; as a newspaper columnist noted, it had been copied directly from the National Hockey league in North America. Luleå’s new entrance concept was par…
Far Darker than the Ikea Paradise of Sensible Volvos”: American Perceptions of Sweden Filtered Through Crime Fiction
This study looks at references made to Sweden in U.S. newspaper and magazine articles discussing Swedish crime fiction. Books by authors such as Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell have enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the United States in recent years, and institutions such as the Swedsh Institute in Stockholm have expressed the hope that this popularity will result in greater interest in and knowledge about Sweden. The findings of the study,…
Tricky Film: The Critical and Legal Reception of I Am Curious (Yellow) in America
This study examines the reception of the Swedish film I am Curious (Yellow) in America. As a mixture of political satire and a chronicle of a sexual affair, with fictional and documentary material, the film was referred to by a U.S. government official as “the most explicit movie ever imported” when it arrived in America in 1968 and was released only after a federal appeals court reversed a lower-court verdict that had found it legally obscene. A…
